On a couple of genealogy sites here, it has Ewing, Ann and son George, lived and died in Scotland.
The Groats at Lake Rowan were a Thomas Henry, Thomas, George and Maggie.

None of your GROATs listed are on the Index for Victoria from 1836-1985.
They must have gone to another State. Each State in Australia has it's own BDM Register.
Do you know when the family migrated here ?

I'm not sure if Ewings and family came to Australia.
He seems to marry and have 3 children with Catherine McKELLAR in Scotland then moves to England and marries Ann 1860,,has son George 1861 then disappears.

Whether it was a name change (possibley to George/GROOT) or not I cannot say as yet as I am having trouble finding them on any census..
IF they did come to Australia it would be after 1861 and possibley before 1871..

I just found the marriage of Ewing Groat to Annie Schofield, 1860, Portsea, HAM...I just googled ewings (the marriage has no s) and mary ann schofield, and the marriage site came up. You may have to go through the scotlands people site or the www.familysearch.org, have you been through any newspapers at all.
