Hi All,
I have a brick wall …

1/ Thomas Woolfenden b 1841 Rochdale Lancashire England to parents Jesse Woolfenden & Hannah/Ann Dean.
Cant locate immigration
Thomas had brother & sisters in USA a sister Mary in Victoria (married Gourlay)
He married in Victoria 30/Dec/1869 Carlton to

Ellen Emma Rosey b 1846 London England to parents Nicholas Rosey (shipcaptain) & Ellen Sophia Randall (died 1846)
Ellen had a couple of aunts in NSW both married TYRRELL
Thomas & Ellen had two children

Cecilia Elizabeth Woolfenden b 3/2/1871 Avoca married 30/12/ 1889 to Alfred Ernest Stephens

Jesse Leonard Woolfenden b1873 died 1874 from whooping cough.

On the marriage certificate of their daughter Cecilia it lists that Cecilia was a Lady from Smith street Collingwood her father as Thomas Woolfenden “Tailor”deceased. Her mother signed the certificate as Ellen Emma Amelia Woolfenden.
I am unable to locate any information on both Thomas & Ellen apart from the info listed above.

To add to the confusion there are some variations of the spellin of WOOLFENDEN.. Wolfenden, Wofenden, Woolfinden, etc…

Can anyone assist ?

Debbie

I went into our wonderful trove newspaper site at www.nla.gov.au, and typed in Thomas Woolfenden, you only have 50 entries to read, have you checked the victorian wills on line, the assisted/unassisted immigration, Victoria, as well as immigration into New South Wales and Queensland, gazettes..

Hi Janelle,
Yes I have checked. There are 2 articles on them, one announcing the marriage and the other an obit for their son. I have Ellen coming into Victoria but unable to find Thomas anywhere. He is not the Thomas Woolfenden and wife Susannah that records show in Victoria. It has unfortunately been a mystery for many years.
With only the one daughter you would imagine that either one of them would be around !

Janelle,
I do vaguely remember the Price.. apparently in the USA line someone had her listed down as Mrs Price or Thomas was with Mrs Price.. go figure.. I was unable to varify anything.

Just checked the UK censuses...looks like Thomas had already left by 1861..

In 1851, Thomas is a scholar and census says born ASTLEY:

WOLFENDEN, Thomas Son M 9 1842 Scholar Astley, Lancashire
Address: 4, Clover Street, Rochdale County: Lancashire

this is the father's probate:

Name: Jesse Woolfenden
Probate Date: 17 Apr 1871
Death Date: 19 Mar 1871
Death Place: Lancashire, England
Registry: Manchester, England
A widower, tailor and draper, of 132 Yorkshire Street, probate granted to daughter Jane, a spinster of the same address - left under 100 quid
...
I found an article in the UK papers where Jesse W , a tailor and formerly a policeman gave a surety of 12 quid to a Master tailor, George WHITE who had become bankrupt and owed a solicitor Mr HUNT 28 quid...GW paid most of the money but stopped owing 6 quid...so HUNT went after Jesse for the balance. For giving surety ( July 1851) GW had given Jesse a Promissory Note of 12 quid...so Jesse sued GW. Unfortunately both Jess and GW gave such contradictory evidence that the judge allowed GW to win ' at the expense of his character' ( I am sure that made Jesse feel much better!)

....

Maybe Thomas W went to the US or NZ first and then came to Australia- maybe something like that - or- there is a huge Typo in his name...have found that before. But anyway, I think from looking at the censuses, he left England between 1851 and 1861
.................
