I'm trying to track down information on my mother's uncle, David Johnstone, brother of Jeanie Valentine Johnstone (Berridge). He would have emigrated from Scotland to New Zealand, then on to Australia. As the only records indicate, he passed in 1966.

Thanks, so much!

Hi John,

Do you know he lived in or passed away in Victoria?
We'll also need the names of his parents and approx year of birth to help you out.

Best wishes,

Jenny

Actually John,

This looks like him. His death certificate should tell you details of any marriages, how long he had been in Victoria and other colonies and a lot of other useful stuff.

Digger - Death Index. Victoria 1921-1985
Surname: JOHNSTONE
Given Names: David Valentine
Father: David
Mother: Jeanie VALENTINE
Death Place: BALW
Age: 69
Year: 1966
Reg Number: 24091
Event: D

This is the record of this man's cremation.

If you click on the location of the ashes it shows the ashes of another person at the location - possibly a wife.

Thank you so much for your quick response! Yes, it is him! The mothers (my Great-Grandmothers) surname was Valentine and both my Grandmother and Great-Uncle had the middle name Valentine. Again, thank you for helping out! Are their any known children?

Hi John,

You would be best to download the death certificate for $20AU for that information. We only have access to births to 1920.

You might find his arrival in Australia here:
http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/Scripts/PassengerSearch.asp

Check out New South Wales BDMs for possible marriages:
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/se...

You might find birth or marriage notices in digitised newspapers here:
http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper?q=

A search of Ancestry's Australian electoral rolls might find other people living with David who may be relatives.

Best wishes,

Jenny

Jenny -

Thank you for this invaluable information. We have tracked one side of my mother's family back to the mid 1500's and on my fathers side have tracked it back to about the same period as the spelling of the surname had changed on his mothers side over time. We arrived in North America (USA)before the Mayflower in 1620. It appears it was the late 1590's to early 1600's when my family actually set foot in what is now the United States. Very interesting that we can begin to pull the rest of the puzzle together thanks to your help! Again, I appreciate all you have done. Please keep in contact as I may need further help down the line.
