From Illinois Marriage Database, these people are from my family.

CREAN, THOMAS JAMES LAWLER, ETTA 11/03/1887 000/ 00120419 Chicago, COOK County, Illinois, USA.

The true names are James Thomas Crean and Loretta Lawler, but they went by "Thomas J. Crean" and "Etta Lawler". They lived in Chicago and their descendents still do live near Chicago. Some family went to the Denver and Arapahoe area of Colorado and still live there. The original Crean family was most likely from Norman and French ancestry and settled in Donegal, Ireland and then Sligo, Ireland. Look for John Crean, son Andrew Crean in Ireland. See also Catherine "Kate" Crean in Ireland. Look at Sligo, Mayo, Galway, Kerry, Cork, etc.

Many names are similar with the family of Leo Bernard Crean, but we don't know the exact connection. It may go back to Ireland. We have Napoleon B. Crean. It could be Bernard or Bonaparte. He was supposedly born in Ireland, but his death certificate says London, England, about 1824. He could be Leo Bernard Crean's brother. Other family names include Charles, William, Thomas, Catherine "Kate", Blanche, John, Andrew, Lester, etc.

My mother called Bridget Kelly her grandmother, although she was not really.

CREANE, JOHN M KELLY, BRIDGET (MISS) 10/16/1876 007/0024 00005650 MONTGOMERY County, Illinois, USA

I was very interested to see the name Dunn. My Napoleon B. (Bryan?) Crean/Crain/Crane married an Anne Dunn in Dublin, Ireland. They moved to Chicago, Illinois. They had Charles, William Thomas, Catherine, James, Thomas Joseph. Catherine may have married a LEE. William married a Roach. Charles married a Decker. Thomas married a Lalor/Lawler. James died young.

What connections do you know about this family?

Leonard Crean and I think we are related. Both familiies married with the Roach family.

We are probably related. My mother visited her Crean cousins in both St. Louis, MO and in New Orleans, LA.

One of her cousins was Monsigneur or Bishop Crean of Loyola University, I believe. Thomas Crean, William Crean and John Crean families still live in Illinois. William Crean started in Chicago, IL and then went to Colorado, and then the children went to St. Louis, MO and also New Orleans. Cousin Andrew Crean also went to Denver and Arapahoe in Colorado.

Where is your family from in Ireland? O'Crean goes back to the 1500s and is most likely of French Norman descent. They are found in Sligo, Kerry, Dublin, and England now.

There are many variations of spelling, but few people of Crean name use this spelling. Others are Crahan, Crehan, Crain, Crane, etc. We pronounce it as CRANE, but the old folk said CRE-AN or Crayon.
