In the 1860 census it listed a wesley Buttram 31,Polly A.28,Sarrah J.8,Columbus 5,Sally A.2,William 9/12,Granvill 21,,s-89-202. My question is does anyone have any information or know who this Granvill is in relation to Wesley Buttram. By the census of 1860 Wesley is 31 and Granvill is 21. Could he be a brother? In a will Wesley was suppose to have written" Conditionally left $100.00 to the heirs of Granvill Buttram". Who is Granvill Buttram?

My great-grandfather was Malon Buttram, brother of Granville Buttram. Malon was born in 1851, while Granville was born in 1859.Another brother was James Wesley Buttram, born about 1844. These were the sons of William Bailey Buttram and Jane "Jennie" Parker. I'm using as my source the BUTTRAM BOOK put out by the Buttram Family Association. Maybe we could work together on this if we're related. Ray

Ray,
William Bailey BUTTRAM was born about 1820 in Wayne Co., KY to Gillie KEETON and James BUTTRAM. William Bailey BUTTRAM had a brother named Wesley, born about 1829 in Morgan Co., TN. This is the Wesley BUTTRAM on the 1860 Scott Co., TN Census mentioned by Janet. On that census Wesley is shown as age 31 and a Granville BUTTRAM in his household is shown as 21, born about 1839. (Not the same Granville BUTTRAM, born about 1859, who was the son of William Bailey BUTTRAM.) I believe the Granville in Wesley's household in 1860 was a younger brother but I have no proof.

Ray, I contributed to the BUTTRAM book you are quoting and helped edit parts of it. It is a great research tool, but it does contain many errors. Many different researchers at all levels of skill and training contributed to it. It is still necessary to look for primary sources, such as documents, to provide proof.

I appreciate the input. It looks like pairs of names appear ever so often, and they're not the same people.

How can one obtain the BUTTRAM BOOK?

My mother's maiden name was Buttram. I'm just beginning to look into my family history. Also, what is the origin of Buttram. I was always told it was Irish, but recently someone mentioned it might perhaps be Welch.

I have the Buttram book. I looked in it and the address it gives is: Buttram Family Association, 4907 Bridgewater Road, Birmingham,AL 35243. IF I remember right it was $35.00. As far as the orgin of the name what I have found is that it is English. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong. That is what I found in a book at the library. Janet
