Hi William, My Great, Great, Great, Great Grandfather was Alexander Munro married to Barbara McKay and they were probably from Armadale, Sutherlandshire. We only know their names at the moment and do not have dates for anything. However their son/my Great, Great, Great Grandfather John Munro was a 'wood sawer', born 1819, Armadale, Sutherlandshire, died 3rd June 1875. He moved to Kirkcaldy and married May Paterson, he also died in Kirkcaldy. All we know are that his parents were Alexander Munro and Barbara McKay. According to your post it says that they were married in 1795 which would fit. We do not know if John had any brothers or sisters though, but a wood sawer goes with a boat builder I suppose!

Thanks, Michael Munro

Ok I think there is a possable match! My Great, Great, Great Grandfather John Munro's parents were definatly Alexander Munro and Barbara McKay. John was born in farr, near Armadale Sutherland, (fife). However I was wrong about his date of birth before, his birth certificate shows he was actually born in 1812 (he change it on later records as he married a wife 21 yrs younger!). Anyway on the certificate he was actually registerd as "McKay John scobie Munro". Does this not match the " M John Munro" you have on your list ? as a child of Alexander Munro and Elizabeth McKay ? Also is that date 1795 for Alexander Munro the date they married ? If so it would fit. Please contact me with any infomation you have which could connect our Ancestors.

Many Thanks Michael Munro

Hi Michael

There is a John Munro in my family tree, a journeyman sawyer, in the 1851 census for Edinburgh, staying with his brother Donald Munro at 306 Lawnmarket Edinburgh on the census day of 30 March 1851.

This is where we might have a problem as his age is recorded as being 40 which would put his birthday in 1811 but he does come from the Parish of Farr which contains the village of Armadale

Donald Munro was my Great Great Great Grandfather and Donald and his wife Georgina and his family, except for one son James, left for Australia in 1854

As there is unlikely to be too many sawyers named John Munro, even with such a common name, I will assume that we are looking at the same John in which case his brothers and sister would be something like the following: which I have copied verbatum from my notes:-

Donald Munro

born1802 Armadale Parish of Farr Sutherlandshire died 1869 Prahran Victoria

married 1826
Georgina Scobie Mackay
born 1804 Parish of Tongue Sutherlandshire died 1890

The history of Donald Munro and Georgina MacKay present a number of puzzles starting with their relationship with the aristocracy of Sutherland. A hint can be found in the entry in Bourke’s Colonial Gentry which contains the Geneology of their son James Munro who was Premier of Victoria in the early 1890s
Alexander Munro of the family of Foulis, Ross-shire married Barbara McKay a relative of the chief of the McKays (Lord Reay). Alexander was a cadet of the family of Foulis, and “removed from his native country,. on receiving an appointment from the Earl of Caithness, about the year 1784
He settled in Armadale, in Lord Reay’s country, where he brought up seven sons and a daughter
Issue
i. James
ii. Gabriel
iii. Donald b 1802
He was formerly a tenant of the Duke of Sutherland in Glen Dubh Parish of Eddrachillis, removed his family to Armadale in 1835, and had them educated there and emigrated to Melbourne, Victoria in 1854, with all his family except James.
Donald Munro married his cousin in 1826 Georgina Scobie MacKay (who died in 1890, and was related on her mother’s side, to the Scobies of Keodale) and d. in 1869 having two sons and five daughters, viz.,
i. John m 1875 his cousin Anne Morrison
ii. James b. 1832
i. Barbara Jane Scobie m 1852 Andrew Jach of Granton W. Edinburgh
ii. Johanna m 1850 Norman MacDonald
iii. Catherine m 1864 James Baike
iv. Janet MacKay Gordon m 1870 William Symons Bryant
v. Alexandrina m 1868 Colin MacLae
iv. George
v. Honeyman
vi. John
vii. MacKay
i. Christina

The following is from my notes on Donald and Georgina:-

As for Donald's adventures in Ausralia mention is made of him in The History of Prahran, From its first settlement to a city by John Butler Cooper (printed 1912)
Page 108 records how settlers obtained water from the Yarra River until the South Yarra Water Supply Company built a pumping house on top of Forest Hill (where Melbourne Boys High stands), which supplied water to hawkers.

"The Prahran Council and the Company were not on good terms" Council erected its own pump at Yarra Street. "That pump was in charge of Donald Munro". The completion of the Yan Yean scheme finally ended the South Yarra waterworks supply and the municipal pumps." Munro then took charge, until his death after the municipal pound situated on the present site of the Grattan St. Gardens.
Munro and his wife lived in Arthur Street, in a two-roomed hut. He subsequently bought land in Pine St., where he built three houses, living in one. Evidently he wrote home to Auld Reekie, for his son James and his wife arrived in 1858 or 59, and they rented from Donald the cottage at the corner of Hazeldene Place. The late Munro, politician, Premier, banker, buyilding society promotor and "land boomer" started his colonial career as the owner of a small grocery business in Prahran. Drifted into a printing office".

Johan McKenzie Munro, daughter of Donald Munro (born 1802) and Georgina McKay born 1804, was born 8 October 1834, Married 18 Jan. 1852. Her second name McKenzie was after the blind minister John McKenzie, who baptised her. One of my notes also says he married her to Norman Hume McDonald. Norman and Johan arrived at Geelong in the sailing ship Hornet 1854. It is said the trip out was so bad that Norman would not continue on in it. The Hornet sailed out of Port Philip heads and was never heard of again.

Johan Munro is my Great Great Grandmother

What we need is at least one more point of definate merging of information to confirm that John Munro is a common relation

Regards

Bill Bell

WOW! Ive just checked my ancestor was registerd with first name 'McKay' surname Munro and he was born on 14th Jan 1812. This is a definate match!! I got my info from the Scottish records site http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
They have confirmed to me that it is my ancestor. I am despratly trying to find out about Alexander Munro's(married Barbara McKay) parents too. I think this also means we are very very distant related. but I am the direct bloodline from McKay Munro who is the youngest of the eight childern.

Hi Michael

That birthdate matches with what I have so we are related. I have a fair bit of information about Donald and Georgina in Australia, but I am really hitting a brick wall with Alexander and Barbara except speculation.

Let me put a package together of what information I have and I will send it directly to your Hotmail address.

OK you have him as "McKay Munro" which is what he was registerd as on 14/01/1812. However his middle name was John which is what he took as his first name later in life. He married May Paterson (born 1833) in 1856 and lied about his age saying he was born 1821 making him 35. They had 7 children together:
1. Marion Munro, B. 1856, D. 1932.
2. Alexander Munro (my GG grandfather) B. 1859
3.Christina Munro , B. 1861
4.Barbara McKay Munro, B. 1836
5.Elizabeth Munro, B.1867, D.1952
6.Hugh Munro, B.1870, D.1945
7.James Munro, B. 1873, D.1875

John Munro himself died in 1875 actually aged 63 but as he had lied on the 1861,1871,1891 and 1901(claimed he was born 1819) census about his age it says on his death certificate he died aged 56. Trust me I've had it all officially checked out and he wasdefinatly born on 14/01/1812 and says so on the birth certificate.

His second child Alexander Munro B. 1859 was my GG grandfather. Alexander married Agnes Kerr(born 1858) married on 27th March 1885 in Kircaldy. They had 4 children:

1. Jessie Hunter Munro (B.1885) (Kircaldy Scottland)
2. May Paterson Munro (B. 1888)
3. John Mckay Munro (my Great Grandfather)
4. Alexander Munro, B. 1893

My Great Grandfather John McKay Munro had 2 children (married Janetta Graham):

1. Alexander Munro (My Grandfather)B. 02/12/1921 Lanark Scottland.
2 Thomas Graham Munro

My Grandfather alexander Munro moved toMalvern, Worcestershire, England and married my Grandmother Margaet Claytor, they had 4 children:

1. Alistair John Munro (My Dad) (Born 1955 Malvern)
2. Jillian Munro
3. Vivian Munro
4. Hialry Munro

My Dad married my Mum Patricia Crehan and had 4 childredn

1. James Munro (born London 1982)
2. Michael Munro (ME!!! born Exetor, Devon 1984)
3. Robert Munro (born Noorthampton 1987)
4. Thomas Munro (born Worcester 1993)
