WATERS, CASTLEBERRY, BENTON

Posted: 21 Feb 1999 12:00PM GMT
Classification: Query
Edited: 30 Jun 2001 4:32PM GMT
Surnames: WATERS, CASTLEBERRY, BENTON, BROOKS, JOLLEY, JOLLY, FLOYD

In my WATERS line, Collison (?Collinson, Collins, Collens,
various spelling) WATERS, b. 1789, (? Cherokee Territory
that later became Jackson Co.) m. Elizabeth Newland
CASTLEBERRY. I can't find where the WATERS came to
GA from. Probably SC. I believe she is connected to the
Odian CASTLEBERRY line, since these families seem to
have been closely associated in Jackson Co. and in Hall Co.

I don't know if you have WATERS - please feel free to
forward to anyone you know.
MY WATERS WEB SITE
http://www.angelfire.com/ga/genealogywaters/index.html
This has my WATERS. There is another WATERS line in
my BROOKS family. Scroll to the bottom of the page and
click on BROOKS (lower case, I think). My grandson has
helped me with my page. It needs a lot of modifying to
make it easier to read, etc. Maybe one of these days I'll get
it fixed.

There was a George WATERS who signed the petition to
the governor in 1798 in regard to the dispute over the
Jackson Co./Cheokee Territory line, better known as the
WOFFORD Settlement. Benjamin and Nathaniel
WOFFORD signed the petition, as well as Thomas
WARREN (and others). Collison had a son, Matthew
Johnson WATERS, who married Elizabeth WARREN. A
Matthew WATERS served on the 1st jury in Jackson Co. in
1797. Was this Collison's father, uncle??? If you have info
on them - or, if you know someone who has - I would love
to find out.

You may already have this, but, just in case:

Is William Elizabeth Newland CASTLEBERRY's father and
how are Odien and Mark CASTLEBERRY related -
brothers, uncles, nephews?

Also, on page 12:
Clayborne CASTLEBERRY witnessed a will. This deed is
one of the earliest in the book but shows "Will dated (blank
month & day) 1819, probated Jan. 4, 1829, recorded pp.
20-21 of Will Book A. The other wills, before and after this
one, are dated 1807 and 1806??? This will was made by

A-47 William HICKMAN. Will dated May 15, 1816,
probated Sept. 2, 1816, recorded pp. 64-65 "...being

Executors: Son, Josiah HICKMAN & son-in-law Richard
HEATH.
Witnesses: Frederick BAGWELL, Joseph DAVIS & Josiah
HICKMAN.

I am researching FLOYD for a brother-in-law. His father
Arnold Eugene FLOYD, b. 1904, Henry Co., GA, m. Ruby
BROWN, buried Liberty Bapt. Ch. Cem., Lovejoy, Henry
Co., GA.

His father was Joseph FLOYD, b. ? AL, came to Henry
Co., GA - I'm not sure when. Joseph FLOYD m. Mary
MITCHELL.

Joseph's father was James Guilford FLOYD, b. June 15,
1816, ?AL, d. Aug 12, 1899, buried Boaz, Marshall Co.,
AL. He was a veteran of the Civil War and the UDC put a
marker on his grave in AL. I don't know if they are
connected with the Hall Co. FLOYD family or not.

I would like to find more on FLOYD and to be able to
connect my WATERS with Elizabeth Newland
CASTLEBERRY's family. Collison WATERS m. (2) Stacy
BENTON. Collison sold property in Jackson Co., in the
early 1800's and moved to Hall Co. He is buried at the
WATERs family cem. near the Hall/Gwinnett line in the
Friendship Ch. community. The WATERS family was
connected with BENTON, CASTLEBERRY, WALKER
(deed), STREET (on deed). In fact, Collison WATERS,
James WALKER, Samuel STREET, Sarah BENTON, and
Reason BENTON (I'm not looking at the deed - doing this
from memory) apparently were joint owners of some
property they sold in Jackson Co.

Look forward to hearing from you.

Is the Timothy b. 1818 listed as Odian Sr.'s children born in Illinois? My ggg grandfather was Timothy Castleberry who married Agnes Bacon on 4-25-1840 in Forsyth Co. GA. There were two different Timothy's on some of the records.

I believe all of Odiam Sr.'s children were born in GA, or SC, but I'm not positive.
Sorry I could not have been of more help.
There is a good Castleberry genforum online that lists the family that came from Germany. The name in Germany was Kessleburg.

In looking through some of the old posts, noted Agnes BACON and remembered her name from info recently abstracted from "Some Georgia Records," Vol. 10 (Van Schaick, Southern Historical Press). There was a WATERS/BEDDINGFIELD connection in some way. Nat Bedingfield was appt admr of Matthew WATERS est, 1783, Wilkes Co., GA, and there was a WATERS who at some point m. a BEDDINGFIELD and lived in Walton Co., GA.

Collinson WATERS (b. abt 1775, d. bef 1830, est prob., Hall Co., GA) m. (1) Elizabeth Newland CASTLEBERRY (2) Stacie BENTON.
