Looking for Dowiat

Surnames: Dowiat
I am looking for any living relatives in Lithuania. My grandfather was Bruno Alexander Dowiat. He was born near Vilnus, Lithuania. To my knowledege he had one older brother named Casamir. My grandfather came to the US in the early 1900's and eventually lived on the south side of Chicago. He owned a barber shop there for many years.
The spelling of the last name might have been changed when he came through ellis island. I have had a great deal of difficulty finding anyone (that I don't already know) with the last name Dowiat.
Thanks For any help
Laura

Laura, There is no "w" in Lithuanian, so that is your first clue that the name was changed. Nearly all Lithuanian names end in 'us', 'is', or 'as.' But some don't. I am no expert, but I do know there is no W in Lithuanian. It has come up quite a bit lately on lithuaniangenealogy@yahoogroups.com, a Lithuanian list I am on.

Hi Laura-

I never thought there were any other Dowiats' out there either. I remember my father, Lee Dowiat, saying something of "other Dowiats'" somewhere in Illinois but I'm not certain if it was family. I believe our original name, from my fathers baptismal certificate, was Dowiatas. My Grandfather, Leopold Dowiat, also imigrated to the U.S. (Pittsburgh, PA) in the early 1900's from Lithuainia. So it's possible we could be related. Good news, or bad? I'll leave that up to you.
I don't know much about my fathers family history. I don't even have any knowledge of my Grandfathers' siblings. Well... so far I've been a great help to you, haven't I?
Please email me if you do come across any info regarding "our" ancestry.

Sincerely,
Gary

I think that correct Lithuanian spelling of surname is Daujotas or Daujotis.
Vidmantas.
