Was your Ely relative from Washington or Greene County, Pennsylvania?
I have a lot of names for this large Ely family starting with George and Christian Ely from the mid-1700s and on.

I also have a Christian Ehli (Ely) in my history. I show him born about 1683 In Hochstadt Germany , Married 26, November 1709 and died 1756 In Berks County Pa.
Son Hans "David" Ely died about 24 March 1761, wife Marie Unrhue, Children Johann "John" Ely, born 24 January 1737 or 1738, wife Elizabeth. Son Jacob "John Jacob" Ely b.1773,married Catherine B. Dreibelbis .
Most all of my relatives seem to have started in Berks County Pa. Some moved later to Jones County Iowa. Any information anyone has on this line of the Elys would be so very helpful. Thanks, good hunting to all. Chuck Ely

I have no family relationship with William L Ely. My reason for the query was to inform of a pistol we have with that inscription on it.

I came across you posting in message board so I hope this makes it to you since your post is almost 14 years old. I have Ely's in my family. I didn't start researching until two years ago. I'm questioning what others have in their family trees, because my Elys were from Carbon County, PA and not Bucks County PA, yet they say that my 3X Great Grandmother was a Ely from Bucks, but my 3X Great Grandfather lived in Lehigh County and they later moved to Carbon County. There is no records, church or otherwise showing her birth death, marriage, everything I have n her is a mystery when my 4X Great Grandmother & Father Ely have so much on them. Makes me think people just grabbed info without checking. Here is my lineage:
Asher Ely (1768 - 1855)
is your 4th great grandfather
Sarah Ely (1799? - ?)
daughter of Asher Ely
Sallianna Fritz (1834 - 1920)
daughter of Sarah Ely
Milton Ellsworth Craig Sr (1863 - 1919)
son of Sallianna Fritz
Russell William Craig Sr. (1894 - 1954)
son of Milton Ellsworth Craig Sr
Elizabeth Ann Craig (1919 - 1977)
daughter of Russell William Craig Sr.

I have five Asher ELYs indexed in my database, though none born as early as 1768:
http://dgmweb.net/FGS/Indices/EveryNameIndex-Ely.html

As far as I know, the Asher ELY's are all descended from an English immigrant, while I descend from a German IHLE/ELY immigrant, so none of these would be "my" 4th great-grandfather.

I work on all ELYs because I'm the admin of the ELY Y-DNA Surname Project:
http://dgmweb.net/DNA/Ely/ElyDNA.html

And for the same reason, I stop following an ELY line when it daughters out, so I would not in any case have your line beyond Asher's daughter, Sarah.

When researching, don't forget to take into account that new counties were being added in Pennsylvania up through 1878, so a change in county name may not represent a move on the part of the family, but the spliting off of a new county. For example, Carbon Co. and Lehigh Co. were formed from Northampton Co., which was formed from Bucks Co.

You may find this page at my web site helpful in that regard:
