The Head family of Berkshire, England

My 3x great grandmother was Hannah Head (1829-1922) from Greenham, Berkshire, England. She married John Baverstock (born 1827 in Newtown, Hampshire, England) in 1850. I have done a lot of research on this family and have traced it back to the death of Richard Hede who died in the parish of Winterbourne, Berkshire, England in 1530. I have a lot of info on the descendants of Richard Hede, these include the English astronomer Francis Baily, the poet Thomas Penrose, and the family of Lord Northbourne.

In the 17th century to family broke into two branches when James Head (born 1609) moved from Winterbourne to Newbury, Berkshire. I am descended from this Newbury branch. Several of the family were Mayors of the borough and often left quite deatiled wills. One member of the Newbury branch moved to America in the 18th century, but I can't remember who.

If anyone's interested in this family let me know and I'll send you more details.

I too am a descendant. I've been researching these names for a few months and have just found where i come in. My Heads traveled over from England and resettled in Little Compton Rhode Island. Henry Hede on down to Sir Richard Head. Is this the family you're talking about. If so I would like to exchange what information that I have.

Hello Charlene

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure if your Head family and mine are related as you didn't say where in England they came from. Mine came from the parishes of Chieveley, Winterbourne, and Newbury in Berkshire and the surrounding parishes. I know that one of the Head family from Newbury travelled to America in the 18th century but can't remember his name (I think it was Edward but I'm not sure) or how (or if) he's connected to my lot. However I'll see what I can find out next time I'm in London and let you know if I find a connection.

Once again thanks for the reply.

Best Wishes.

Hello Matthew,
I'm sorry that I didn't make my information clear. My ancester was Henry Hede of London about the beginning of the sixteenth century who was sheriff of that place in 1507 and alderman at a later date. There was a family traditon that two brothers, sons of Sir Richard Head born 1609 was created a Baron by Caries II, were in love with the same girl. They agreed that the rejected suitor would come to America and was the progenitor of the Heads in this country. The dates of Henry being born in 1609 and my Richard being born in 1609 was confusing. There was one Hamo de Hede in 1291, as Bishop of Rochester and Confessor to King Edward II. The family is of antiquity in County Kent England, whatever that means. Thanks anyway . I hope I didn't get to far off from the Head line.

Just got your message. I've got several pages of data that I got from a distant relative. Her name is Sherry Dungan. We descend down through the family and I think we're cousins. Do you have a lot of information from Henry . My line comes in With Richard. If you would like to exchange information let me know and I'll be glad to send you what I have. I have papers from several differnt sources from the earliest Thomas De Head and on down. My line that I have a lot of info on is from Henry Head and Elizabeth Ketchum, Their son Jonathan and Susannah Wilcox, their son Joseph and Bathsheba Palmer and on down. If your line is different I could add it to what I have and vice versa.
Thanks for getting in touch.

Charlene:
My line must be different from yours, I do not recognize any of your names from Henry and Elizabeth Ketchum.
Henry HEAD 1695 and Frances Spence can be found online.
http://family search.org/Search/af/family-group-record.asp?familyid=7469685

Their son Alexander Spence Head 1721 is my line from there. Then Benjamin 1756 Va. Then Rev. Wm. Head 1807-Joseph Blake Head 1862--Pansy Head 1885 (my mother). Most Heads of this line came to Ky. from Va.

According to my Book , none of the ancestors
of Henry could be documented, but that was more than 50 years ago. .

Would love to have whatever you have from Thomas De Head, etc.

Thanks for whatever you can send me, and let me know if you need more of my HEAD line.

Hello

I'm happy to send you info on the Head family, but there is an awful lot so I'll send you it in GEDCOM format if that's ok. At the moment I don't know of any Alfred Heads in my family, do you know where he was born?

Send me your address and I'll send you the info I have.

My email address is:

Thanks
