My GGrandfather, Thomas Godwin, was born in 1874 in Mitchel County, GA. I have his father (my GGGrandfather) listed as Alfred Godwin and born in 1850. His wife was Caroline Harrell.I can't find anything else going back on that Godwin line. We heard stories growing up that Tom's parents were killed in a wagon accident and that he was raised by other Godwin family members. I would appreciate any information. I've been wondering if perhaps Alfred immigrated.

Tom Godwin was my grandfather's older brother. He was in his 20's when my Grandfather Jack Godwin was born. Jack Godwin married a lady named Sawyer and had several kids. When she died, he married my Grandmother, Mamie Glover Godwin. I know uncle Tome died in about 1975 at the age of 101. I am just beginning to trace my Mother's family, and will add anything I find.

Man those elders loved that wagon accident story. We were told the same story about our lines. Turned out to be false.

Tony, can you give me any info on where Samuel Alfred Godwin II might be buried? I'm pretty sure that his wife, Martha Ann Cole, is buried at the Campground Cemetery in Hardin Co. TN, but I can't find anything about his gravesite.

Thanks,
Vonda Gay Godwin Johnson

Hi Vonda (cuz),

SAG II just disappeared one day during the Civil War (17 Feb 1863). None of the family, including me, has any idea what happened to him. The battle of Shiloh was just south of Savannah, Hardin County, TN. I think he was part of the local CSA militia who would fight Yankees when they came around. He was probably mixed in with CSA KIAs, was killed and buried in one of the 100's of CW mass graves with no surviving index of who was buried there, if marked at all.SAG I was most likely the same Samuel Alfred Godwin born in Hertford County, NC. He was born in GA (during their migration away from NC en route to Maury or Hertford County, NC), and his father was born in Hertford County, NC, son of Kearney. No relationship to the famous Capt/Col Thomas Godwin clan.

That's about all I have, sorry. Here's my tree (still under construction):

Wow! That is so interesting! I'm originally from Savannah TN & I have never heard that story. I've just recently started researching my family history. I am descended from SAG II to SAG III to Lewis Valentine Godwin to Nelson Baxter Godwin, who is my father. So we are not descended from the Capt/Col Thomas Godwin clan? I got stuck on Kearney and got confused from there. Thanks so much for the info, & it's nice to hear from my cuz!
