Roswell Bush abt. 1795 - 1871 Rochester

I believe Roswell Bush was an 1812 veteran. His widow Ellen applied for and was granted a pension in JAN 1878. The top of the gov't form has "1812" handwritten.

There is a Roswell Bush on Rootsweb who is the right age but shows wife Ann Canfield. Of interest, Roswell Bush in 1870 boarding at 74 East Avenue, Rochester with a Sarah Canfield also listed at that address. No Ellen is listed.

I am seeking information on Ellen. Any leads or direction is appreciated.

She appears in the 1880 census of Rochester in the City Hospital, aged 66. She is not in the 1818-1897 newspaper index. But the online Mt. Hope cemetery records [http://www.lib.rochester.edu/IN/RBSCP/Databases/IMAGES/MtHop...] show an Ellen Bush, aged 67 dying in the Alms House, buried Feb 13, 1884.

Thanks for checking the newspaper indexes. I hadn't done that yet.

I located Roswell's 1812 pension summary which says widow Ellen died about 1884, so that fits. The person in Mt. Hope could be her except it says she's GER and my Ellen Bush is ENG plus Ellen did have a pension and family in the area so it seems less likely she would be in the almshouse unless I misunderstand what the almshouse was.

Ellen was Roswell's 2nd wife, Ann Canfield being 1st.

Yes, the Mt. Hope records definitely says "Ger"; so who knows if that's the right woman. But everyhting else is a near fit. The Alms House was the Poor House - see http://www.poorhousestory.com/MONROE.htm, but the city hospital was not the poor house. Curious.

Thank you for the guidance. I'm trying to understand the link between Ellen Bush and Ellen White Burns.

I rechecked the Mt. Hope listings and don't you know Ellen Bush is buried in the same corner of the same range and lot as my Burns family so I believe we did find the right Ellen Bush.

1830 Census, Roswell Bush, Town of Brighton, Village of Rochester, 4th Ward, 1 M <5, 1 M of 30<40, 1 F of 30<40. I believe this is his 1st wife Ann Canfield.

Roswell and Ellen marry 05 SEP 1842, Rochester. I don't know that they had any children but my gggm Ellen b 1836 and her brother George b 1834 are listed with them in the 1850 census. Roswell died 09 DEC 1873.

Jan 1878 pension application for which Ellen Bush applied and was granted has her living with my Burns family on North Street. I may have to see if I can locate her Inmate Registration Certificate.

Thanks again and what a great resource we have in the Mt. Hope site!

We just checked the newspaper index for that time period, and these is an entry which reads (in the index - the papers are kept elsewhere), Roswell Bush married Mrs. Ellen White, Rochester Daily Democrat Sept 9, 1841, page 2 col 7; and Rochester Gen and Ladies Amulet (available online in our catalog - http://www.libraryweb.org/~digitized/serials/gem/1841Vol.XII...), Sept 18, 1841, page 156 column 3
-------------------------------------
From the 1850 census:

1850 United States Federal Census
about Roswell Bush
Name: Roswell Bush
Age: 53
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1797
Birth Place: Connecticut
Gender: Male
Home in 1850(City,County,State): Rochester Ward 2, Monroe, New York
Household Members:
Name Age
Ellen Bush 41
Ellen Bush 13
George Bush 16
Roswell Bush 53
Andrew Dolan 23
Mary Dolan 19
Cordelia Murphy 17
--------------------
Given they were married in 1842, Ellen White Bush would have been about 33 at that time (certainly young enough to have more children) but the ages of the ones living with the couple don't seem to indicate that they had any natural children, or that if they did, that they survived.

Thanks for the link.

I located the Rochester Republican, Monday, Feb. 12, 1838. Died, At Clyde, Ashtebula, OH, on 2d Feb. inst., of consumption, Mrs. Mary Ann Bush, wife of Roswell Bush, formerly of this city. I believe she is Ann Canfield.

I hope to locate a death notice for a Mr. White between 1839 and 1842.

Thanks again!

That's what's neat about that index - Rochester papers can carry an Ohio death. Good luck on finding Mr. White!

I haven't yet found a death notice for Mr. White, but I received Ellen White's death cert so I know his name and his wife's name - George White and Ellen Wilson.

Plus Ellen White's birthplace - Cheshire, Ontario, NY, which narrows things down.

There are some George White's listed in the newspaper index:
http://www.libraryweb.org/~digitized/newsindex/1818-1850/TRI...
but none of them seem to be the one you seek.
