Dehnhardt or Daenhardt family

Dehnhardt or Daenhardt family

Hi I have a GGGGrandfather named Johan Frederick Daenhardt. He was born about 1790 in Vejle, Vejle, Denmark. He married Zidsel or Lidsel Hansdatter on 4 May 1811 in Norup, Vejle, Denmark. Obviously Daenhardt is a German name. I am trying to extend the Denhardt name from Johan. Does anyone else have any ideas where I can start. At some point this family must have immigrated from Germany. I don't know why or when. Any help or guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks, Lynn

Thank you so much. Would you know where in Germany he was born or how I would go about finding that information?

Lynn

Aloha, Lynn.
My grandfather was Wilhelm Karl August Dehnhardt II, born in Germany, lived in Toledo, died in 1987. I've got pictures of him at his home in Germay as a boy. Wonder about the connection to your GGGGrandfather. Cindy

Hi, I'm trying to track down the Dehnhardt line as well. Have you had any more luck?

I know that name August Daenhardt. I'd love a copy of the picture you mention. I'm looking for Johan Friedrich Daenhardt, who may be a brother.

Hej Steve, I'm sure if Flemming had found Johan's birth place he would post it. FYI usually if a genealogy trail leads to Germany, experts in Danish genealogy pass the baton. That region has a different set of tools for research.

You might try probate records for Johan in Nørup sogn to see if any siblings in Germany/Prussia are mentioned.

In 1834 Johan was living at Lihme Mark, Nørup sogn, Tørrild herred, Vejle. His wife is Sidsel (sometimes spelled Zidsel) Hansdatter. A lodger and her daughter are living at the same address or in their household. This lodger must be Johan's daughter. Based on the records below, her name would be
Ane Marie Lovise Johannesdatter Dehnhardt born about 1811 in Nørup sogn. She continues to live with Sidsel after Johan's death.

Another clue to Johan's origins could be Johan's occupation. This could be related to his reasons for migrating.

Danish Census 1834
Vejle, Tørrild, Nørup, Udbygger paa Lihme Mark, et Huus, 39, FT-1834, C0679
Johan Fredrik Deenhart 48 Gift Fæstehuusmand og Papiiermager
Sidsel Hansdatter 51 Gift Hans Kone (born about 1783)
Ane Marie Lovise Johannesdatter 23 Gift Indsidder
Laurits Johansen Hendes Søn

The next earlier census as you no doubt know is 1801.

We know Sidsel would be a widow in 1840 census. This is likely her:

1840
Vejle, Tørrild, Nørup, Lihme Mark, et Huus, 81, FT-1840, C2641
Sidsel Hansdatter 58 Enke/widow Lever af sni huuslod
Johan Lauritsen 30 Gift Daglejer
Lovise Johannesdatter 29 Gift Hans Kone
Laurits Johansen 7 Ugift Deres Børn
Sidsel Marie Johansen 5 Ugift Deres Børn
Johanne Frederikke Johansen 3 Ugift Deres Børn
Christian Johansen 1 Ugift Deres Børn

In 1845 Sidsel has adopted the modern-day practice of a woman taking her husband's surname (or at least the census taker thinks so):

1845
Vejle, Tørrild, Nørup, Lihme Mark, et huus, 118, FT-1845, c1578
Ane Marie Lovise Dehnhardt 35 Ugift Indsidder ernærer sig med lidt haandarbejde (birthplace) Her i sognet
Laust Johansen 12 Ugift Hendes børn Her i sognet
Sidsel Marie Johansen 10 Ugift Hendes børn Her i sognet
Joh Frederik Johansen 8 Ugift Hendes børn Her i sognet
Henrik Johansen 3 Ugift Hendes børn Her i sognet
en datter (udøbt) 1 Ugift Hendes børn Her i sognet
Sidsel Dehnhart 66 Enke Huuskone ernærer sig med lidt haandarbejde Her i sognet <------------

Since Sidesel was born in Nørup sogn, her marriage no doubt took place in Nørup sogn. Look up (or ask for a look up) of this marriage record because it may mention Johan's birthplace.

=========================================================

Possibly the same Sidsel in 1787 in the village of Lihme:

1787
Vejle, Tørrild, Nørup, Nørup Sogn, Lihme Bye, 68, FT-1787, C2110
Karen Madsdatter!! 27 Enke Madmoder Bonde Kone og Gaard Beboerske
Terkild Hansen 5 - Hendes Børn af 1ste Ægteskab
Sidsel Hansdatter 4 - Hendes Børn af 1ste Ægteskab
Maren Hansdatter 2 - Hendes Børn af 1ste Ægteskab
Marthe Madsdaatter 15 Ugift Hendes Søster Som Tienestepige

Thank you for taking the time to write all of this down.

Some time ago, I believe I did find on a record from Norup a marriage that probably included Johann's birthplace. I read Danish, but this one was very difficult to decipher.

I also found a Johann Denhardt (multiple spellings which appears to have originated from Steinrode, Germany, a bit northeast of Frankfurt.

There is much more research to be done here, but I am optimistic that this one will be solved.

Lynn,

Cousin Steve here. I have some reason to believe that Johann was born in Steinrode, Germany, a bit northeast of Frankfurt. Off hand, I don't remember how I found that one...I'd have to look at it again.

Still, it would appear that his brother was born in Norup.

More later,
