Any info appreciated.

The best place for information on Newfoundland genealogy is the Newfoundland Grand Banks genealogy website. I'm sure you'll be able to find quite a bit there. There is a search feature at the bottom of each page.

There is also a book about New Harbour called Two Outports that I got from Amazon about a year ago.

I have no Thorne connection that I know of but I am interested in their origins. My family name is Rockwood. The Rockwoods appeared in Heart's Content about 1770 and the Thornes (Thorntons) appeared in New Harbour about the same time. There is a reference in Benjamin Lester's journal (Trinity, 1767) to Rockwood and Thorne. Lester was a merchant in Trinity connected with Poole, England.

A relative of mine from California believes the pair (Rockwood and Thorne) came from New Hampshire during the French / Indian wars. I think that's possible but there are other possibilities, as well. Most Newfoundlanders trace their roots to the west of England, Ireland and the Channel Islands.

Hope this helps.
