FOGLE-VOGEL, Seeking information on Fogle family members in Hackettstown and surrounding area late 1800-1990's. Family came over from Germany with the name of FOGLE, and it was changed to Vogel (date un-known). Known family members were John (father of) a Floyd and his sister Mary Ann, other siblings names unknown. Floyd may be the one who changed name to Vogel. He was the Fire Chief in Hackettstown from 1937-1938. He was married to a Dorothy who had a daughter by her 1st. marriage. They lived at 500 Moore St. in Hackettstown and she owned a ladies dress shop called The Genevieve Shop. Floyd's sister Mary Ann married a Jacob Stewart Woolever. Seeking any information about this FOGLE-VOGEL family. Send reply's to: Judyacount@AOL.COM

Odds are that the original surname from Germany was VOGEL and it was Americanized to FOGLE, the way a native German would pronounce it. My wife has VOGEL ancestors from Woerth on Rhine, Germany who emigrated first to Washington, DC area and then to Franklin County, Indiana. The name was eventially changed to FOGLE.

You are correct. The name was originally VOGEL in Germany. It was anglicized to FOGEL. A branch of the family moved from Pennsylvannia to South Carolina and the name was changed to FOGLE. Why is a mystery.

Seeking info on Anthony (Vogel/Fogel) Fogle. Anthony was born about 1745. He settled in West Augusta County, VA. and served in Revoulutionary War. Anthony was married, however his first wife's name is unknown. They had two chilren, Phillip and Catherine. His wife died and Anthony moved, sometime before 1790, near Fort Motte, SC leaving his two children in VA. According to records of Saint Mathews Luthern Church, he later married Rachel, (last name unknown) and they had seven children. The last record mentioning Anthony was February 16, 1814 so Anthony probably died soon after February, 1814.

Per Augusta Co. Virginia court records, Catherine Fogel, daughter of Anthony Fogel, married Jacob Cain on June 6, 1785. Sounds like your Anthony. I'm trying to find if Jacob Cain + Catherine Fogel had a daughter named Mary (Polly) born abt. 1788. If you know anything of the children of Catherine Fogel Cain, I'd sure enjoy hearing back at wimado@aol.com

Just a note: Augusta Co. at one time extended
to the Mississippi River, and was divided and
subdivided to what it is today.
Anthony Fogle(Augusta Co.), revolutionary
soldier, Capt. Buchanan's Co. Most likely
father of Catherine and grandfather of John.
It may be that Catherine had an illegitimate
child John, who was bound over to Thomas Rut-
ledge.
There is an Anthony Fogle listed in the 1790
census of So. Carolina. Perhaps, he migrated
there after the war.
I have a Catherine Faesel(Fogle?) daughter of
Michael and ascendent of the Taylor line, but
not the same as Anthony's daughter.
Concerning Mary(Polly) Fogle, I have her as
the wife of Philip, son of Michael Jr. From
my records, it appears that her maiden name
was, Mary Burner, born about 1790, d. 1822.
Further information I have is that an Anthony
who was son(?) of Phillip Gabriel Von Vogel,
who arrived in Pennsylvania around 1740?

Leroy, It has been too long for me to remember what I sent. (Oldtimer's disease) I have some Vogel records from the Evangelical Church in Woerth that contain several Valentine given names. Can you give me an approximate birth date?
