Hi Anouk,
Glad to hear from another Toppen in Holland and it would be exciting if there is a connection. My g-grandfather's name was John (Jan) P. Toppen and he was married to a Wilhelmina Bronsema in the Netherlands. They had two children in Holland, Peter and Wilhelmina and a third in the U.S., John. The family immigrated to the U.S. in 1881 and settled in Muskegon, Michigan; a large Dutch (Groningon) settlement in Michigan. I know they had relatives in Holland because I have a letter dated Dec. 1899 from family in Holland written in Dutch (Gronings).
Do you have any family history from the mid to early 1800?
My e-mail address is toppenhr@home.com
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello, I was just tracing my Tuttle side family history and found Toppen's from Holland. Here is what I have. I'll try not to confuse you. My grandmothers mother was Viola Evangeline Toppen. Viola's parents were Viola Evangeline(maiden,Hammond) and John Henry Toppen(born 11-10-1869 and died 3-2-1930). His father was Cornelius John Toppen. Cornelius John Toppen and a unknown friend were stow aways on a ship from Zandt, Holland. Cornelius was said to be only 14 years old at the time. Cornelius married a Cecelia Crumb. My grandmother has passed down a story told to her that Cornelius owned a lot in Chicago on the corner of State and Madison Street that was in the "Great Chicago Fire" Lost everything in the fire. All that Cornelius was able to get out was a chest, old mirror, and his infant son which was John Henry Toppen. There is also a Toppen family plot at St.Joseph's cemetary in Rivergrove, Illinois. I am still researching and my grandmother is looking deeper into her trunks for more info. and dates. If any similarities or connections please e-mail me at barbieheim@hotmail.com I would love to hear from anyone!

My gr.grandmother Viola Evangeline Toppen had many siblings:
1. Cecelia Margaret Toppen who married James McMahon and they had 5 daughters.
2. Henrietta Marie Toppen who married Al O'Siol
3. Robert Peter Toppen who married a women with the name Viola. They had 3 children: Jeanette, Robert, and May. Viola died in the flu epidemic and Robert affected by the flu died as well in a Elgin Hospital in Illinois. Their 3 kids were raised by Roberts mother Viola Evangeline Toppen maiden name Hammond.
4. Cornelius John Toppen married a Barbara ?.
5. John Henry Topin (not much on him, we know he did marry but who?)
6. William Bernard Toppen who married Althea and had a daughter Prisilla.
7. Isabelle Catherine Toppen
8. Margarette (middle name?) Topen married a Ben Bagadonis.

Okay all those children listed above were children of John Henry Toppen we beleive born Nov. 10, 1869 and died March 2, 1930. Now this John Henry Toppen had alot of siblings as well:
1.Teckla
2.Elizabeth
3.Katherine-twin
4.Helen-twin
5.Annie
6.William
7.Bernard

Now all of these children I justed listed were of Cornelius John Toppen who married Cecelia Crumb. Cornelius John Toppen we beleive to have stow-awayed on a ship at age 14 years old from Zandt, Holland and lived at the corner of State and Madison Street in Chicago, Illinois and was in that famous well known fire called the "Great Chicago Fire". I can be e-mailed at barbieheim@hotmail.com I would love to make a connection with someone who share's this information. Dawn Heim

I am the daughter of Robert Peter Toppen, niece of Jeanette and May Toppen. I stumbled on this website by accident when researching Mount Toppen in Dutch New Guina (may also be named after a long lost relation that was a Dutch explorer). I called my father, Robert, and relayed the information on this web site and he requested that I correct some mis-information. His mother, Viola, did not die from the flu, but from phenomnia several months after being severly burned from the waist down by boiling water that was being heated to give Jeanette a bath.
My father married Pauline Estelle Frost (later changed to Goss)and had 4 children: Christopher Robert; William James; Anne Viola and Mary Margaret.
My father remembers that his uncle, John Henry Toppen, at the turn-of-the-century held the title of "The World's Strongest Man" and remembers seeing his medals for "Tug-of-War" championships.
My father is now 91 years old and still going strong, but both Aunt Jean and May have both passed away. My father was both a pilot and paratrooper in the 101st in WWII as well as being a founder member of the 1st Special Service Force (later to become the Green Beret's).
Looking forward to hearing from any of you and learning more about my family.
