I have never researched in Poland info before, so would appreciate some guidance. My Dargaczewski line came to Nebraska around 1881. Nickolas had two sons Xavier b Jan 1857 and Nicodemus b Dec 1858. The brothers lived in Omaha, NE where they married and raised their families. I know nothing of their father other than name, and do not know their mother. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you. Megan

Re: Dargaczewski of Danzig/Gdansk before 1881
Perhaps they were a part of this family from a Polish village Godziszewo (formerly Gardschau):
Parents: Nicolaus Targaczewski (sometimes spelled Dargaczewski) Catharina Jędrnalik (sometimes spelled Jendralik) – married in 1835 in Godziszewo (he was 25 years old, she was 18)
Their children (all born in Godziszewo): Leo – 1836 Josephina Catharina – 1839 Marianna – 1842 Johann – 1844 Franz –1846 Anna Barbara – 1849 Joseph – 1852 Xaverius – 1854 Nicodem – 1858
I found them in the database of Pomeranian Genealogical Association.
As you can see, it's a large family with quite unusual surname - even in Poland it generally occurs only in Pomerania.
Xavier's year of birth does not match, but it may be a small mistake (are you certain that 1857 is the true date of his birth?).

Re: Dargaczewski of Danzig/Gdansk before 1881
Hello, Interesting as I have always wondered whether my Dargaczewskis were related to a group of Targaczewskis who also happened to settle in Omaha, NE. Even though they each stuck with either the T or D, I have not been able to link them here in the US. Thanks for the lead and suggestion!

Re: Dargaczewski of Danzig/Gdansk before 1881
In old Polish/Prussian records forms "Targaczewski" and "Dargaczewski" should be considered as identical, as it often happened that one person in one certificate was written as "Dargaczewski", and in others as "Targaczewski" - and it was still the same person. The difference in pronunciation is rather small.
In this family certificates I also found similar examples.
So maybe your Dargaczewskis and those Targaczewskis were related, but your common ancestor did not live in the U.S., only a bit earlier - in the eighteenth- or the nineteenth-century Poland/Prussia.

Re: Dargaczewski of Danzig/Gdansk before 1881
Hi, I live in Omaha and Nickolas Dargaczewski is my GGgrandafather and the family info is correct. I am not at home but I can double check later but it looked correct. My uncles tell me that Xavier worked in the mines in Pa when he first arrived here and my grandmother was born there. Does any one have any information regarding that....Thank you very much Jucy

Hi, do you know whether or not Michael Targaczewski was related in some way to the Targaczewski/Dargaczewski line of Omaha, NE? My GGGrandfather Michael Targaczewski and his wife Josephine Szymkowski (Ziemkowski) who for the most part lived in Chicago, had their two oldest children, Leo and Mary, born in Omaha, NE. Given the Targaczewski line in that city, I'm thinking they are in some way related. I know there was a Leo (or Leon) Targaczewski in the censuses in Omaha and I'm thinking my gggrandfather probably named his firstborn son after someone in his family.
Michael was born about 1863, so was not listed in the previous Pomeranian database in this thread, but could have also been part of this family. I've found Michael in a passenger list as coming to America in 1881. He's listed as traveling with a Leo and Marianna Targaczewski, both born around 1841 according to the passenger list. While it could be Michael was traveling with his parents, it could also be that Michael age 18, was traveling with his older brother Leo.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Dargaczewski of Danzig/Gdansk before 1881
Hello all,
This is all very fascinating. My ancestors also came from the Godziszewo/Gardschau area and settled in Omaha, Nebraska. I believe they first settled there around 1882.
It also sounds like I have been using the same website that some of you have. I do have access to another one also that might be helpful.
I do know that there was an effort to recruit Polish people to move to Nebraska and work in farming during that time frame. However, many decided to stay in the Omaha area and work the labor jobs that were available.
I would love to share information with anyone who has a connection to that area of Poland and Omaha, Nebraska.
