My ancestor Adam BLACK / (SCHWARZ) had a daughter Mary BLACK/SCHWARZ, born say 1766 who married a Mr. SIGHTS, and was called Mary SIGHTS in his will written in 1789 in Rowan County. Her husband may have been Jacob SIGHTS, who was a witness to a deed in 1796 in Stokes County from Adam's widow Sarah to their son Frederick BLACK.

SEITZ/SIGHTS researchers generally list the wife of Jacob SEITZ/SIGHTS as Mary Elizabeth PRESTON. This site:
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~harrisonrep/Johnson...

states that a KY history lists his wife as Mary PRESTON, and an Illinois history lists it as Mary BLACK. This Jacob went to KY and then to Illinois. I wonder if perhaps Jacob had two marriages, one to Mary BLACK, and another to a PRESTON.

You can see information on my SCHWARZ/BLACK family at:

Hi Fredric,
Thanks for the info on the Seitz name from NC,and it has been called Seitz/Sitz/Sites/Sights,Sitze,Sits,Sides,especially in the Warren/Marion/Grundy Co's of TN abt 1800/1860. I noticed the Sanders surnames in your line. I also have the name in my Lankford/Choate/Vaughan/Vaughn line from Marion/Grundy/Warren Co's of TN when it was still Indian Terr. It is possible that my Langford/Lankford,and Sanders came to the same area of TN at the same time from NC.
Roy.

I read Adam Black's will (which can be found at: http://home.netcom.com/~fzsaund/black.html while it does list Mary Sights, it does not identify Mary as a daughter, it says "I do allow Mary Sights & Catren Mock Eatch of them to have ten pounds." ALL the other persons in the will are specifically identified by wife, son, daughter, etc. It also says give and bequeath when naming those family members. But for Mary or Catren it says allow, not give or bequeath. If they were also his daughters why would he list the others as family members but not these two? While having your name in someone's will can infer family members, it does not positively identify that person as a blood relative unless it says so or you have some other documentation. Everything I have found says that Jacob Sights had one wife, Mary Elizabeth Preston. Jacob and Mary had two daughters namned Mary and Catherine who were both born in North Carolina.

The key word in the phrase is "allow." The other daughters were single and as you note called daughters, and all received a cow, a heifer, a calf, a bed and spinning wheel.

Adam Black stated "I do allow Mary Sights & Catren Mock Eatch of them to have ten pounds." If they were non-relatives or relation other than daughters, the phrase wouldn't be "allow" but would be "I give" or I bequeath" or something similar. That word "allow" implies that they have already received from his estate as heirs, and he was "allowing" them to have another 10 pounds each.

Next, there is proof that Catherine was nee BLACK from her marriage bond to Henry MOCK. The only other BLACK family in the area was that of Adam's brother Jacob, and he had no daughter named Catherine. To have married in 1787 (plus the ages of her children) implies Catherine was born in probably the late 1760s or early 1770s and would be too old to be a grandchild of Adam, as Adam's oldest son would have only been about age 10 when Catherine was born. Since Catherine was nee BLACK, the only person in the area who was of age be her father is Adam, and he named her in his will as Catherine MOCK.

With proof that Catherine was nee BLACK, and the only person of age in the area to her father was Adam so that she would be his daughter, it increases the likelihood that Mary LIGHTS named in the same phrase was also a daughter.

Jacob SIGHTS witnessed a deed for the BLACK family. I will need to check through my files, but I think he may have also been a bondsman for one of the marriages.

The site listed in the original post doesn't list which history but stated that an Illinois [county?] history lists that Jacob Sights wife was Mary BLACK. With that "tradition" that his wife was a BLACK, again, the only BLACK in the area who could have been her father was Adam, and he names Mary SIGHTS in his will.

Do you have original records proving that Jacob SIGHTS wife was a PRESTON? I don't know of any PRESTON families living in the vicinity of where he and the BLACK family were living in NC that Jacob could have married into. Most sites I have seen also list a son Adam SIGHTS (and others) for Jacob, which would appear to be named after Adam BLACK.

I think that Jacob SIGHTS had two wives, one was Mary BLACK, and the other was a PRESTON.

No, I don't have a original document proving Mary Elizabeth Preston and Jacob Sights were married. I do have a narrative written by a Sights researcher who wrote to every Seitz/Sides/Sights/Sites living in the U.S. and compiled all of their research. I have 122+ pages of said research, which says that Jacob was from Philadelphia the son of Peter Seitz. Mary Elizabeth Preston was also from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Jacob and Mary married 1783 in Philadelphia, after the Revolutionary War. Their children were born in North Carolina (Adam, Mary, David, Isaac, Ann, Catherine, Frances, Elizabeth) It is possible that Jacob had 2 wives, but in the research it says that Mary's mother (also a Mary) married a Black after Mr. Preston died. I will contact the Sights researcher and see if she has documentation of the Preston/Sights marriage in 1783. Thanks for responding to my message.

I am trying to prove that Jacob Sights fought with the North Carolina Militia or other troops during the Revolutionary war. I have his enlistment papers for the 4 Light Dragoons in Penn., etc, but have found no proof of service for NC as he states in one of his court appearance while trying to collect a Rev. War Pension (which he never received one) You stated in our last exchange that Jacob witnessed some of the Black documents, maybe was even a bondsman of one of their marriages. Would you be willing to share that info? I am trying to have ol Jacob recognized by the DAR. I have submitted 122 pages of info on him, but bottom line unless I can prove his service in NC i.e. land or bounty received, etc they believe him to be a deserter and will not recognize him (Jacob says in his sworn statements before a court in Montgomery County, IL he was taken prisoner and put on a prison ship, then escaped while ship was docked near Charleston). I have found Jacob's name listed on a deed in Rowan NC, but only as a reference point when his neighbor was trying to sell some property. So anything you have that places him in NC would help...thanks...please contact me directly at caregiver.2006@hotmail.com

I just came across this record, that was transcribed in 2012.

http://history.montgomeryco.com/History/tabid/1138/ID/473/Re...

In a letter in 1914, Belle Grantham Hughes (great-granddaughter of Jacob and Mary) stated that Jacob Sights married Mary Black.

Thank you very much for sending a message with a link to the new information. This clears up the question about Jacob's wife Mary's last name. Without a doubt is was Black, as stated by their great granddaughter. This will help me move forward with my research in a new direction. I remain gratefully yours!
