I'm searching for more information on this family- they immigrated to the United States around 1890 and had 7 children- Mary, Katherine, Louis, Annie, Tilly, Clara and John.

Louis was born in 1890 and died in 1971 and married Elizabeth Gegan. They lived in New Jersey and had three children- Richard, Lois and William.

Where, in which historical region of Austria were your ancestors born?

Do you know language of your ancestor?

From what document is the female first name Westfalecia ?

Louis Washkau
Born: 1890 Died: 1971
State of last residence: New Jersey
State issued: New Jersey
Louis's SS-5Form should have his place of birth and parents names. His church baptismal record also should have his parents place of birth.

It is possible that Joseph's arrival manifest might have a place of birth. The KEY to learning more about one's ancestors is to find what VILLAGE they came from.

I'm assuming they spoke German, coming from Austria- I really have no information on the family at all, it's just what I could find on here.

I have not uncovered anything further than what I posted.

Unfortunately in genealogy one can not assume.
Seeing that one child was named Tillie I sort of was leaning toward historical region Galicia.

You do not know religion of these ancestors? I would start with the census and also the church the children were baptised in.

Tillie/Tilly is shortform for Mathilde/Mathilda.
is not only from Galicia.
TILLY
GENDER: Feminine
USAGE: English
Diminutive of MATILDA
VARIANTS: Mattie, Tilda, Tillie, Maudie
OTHER LANGUAGES: Til (Dutch), Tilda (Finnish), Tilda (Swedish)

but Waschkau is really not an "austrian" name. orgin more of Germany´s north, so also can have been from East-Prussia like Ellisisland shows with Königsberg, now Kaliningrad, Russia:

ZlaticaBeca you can be right - maybe also people with that name in former Galicia and surroundings, so then would have been Austria that time.

In the 1900 census, Joseph indicates he arrived in 1890, but his wife and the three children at the time say they arrived in 1892, so after Joseph. As the youngest of the three, Louis, was born in August 1890, Joseph likely left shortly before or shortly after his birth.

The 1895 New Jersey State Census indicate that they are foreign born (but not German or Irish). I cannot make out his wife's name, but is not Westfalcea (or derivative). Based on the info below, she likely gave her maiden name on the 1900 census.

Here is Clara's baptismal information:

Name: Clara Isabella Washkau
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 5 Aug 1896
Birth Place: Our Lady of The Valley, Orange, Essex, New Jersey
Christening Date: 30 Aug 1896
Christening Place: Our Lady of the Valley, Orange, Essex, New Jersey
Father's Name: Joseph Washkau
Mother's Name: Anna Nastivalewiaz
FHL Film Number: 1378182

And John's:

Name: John Washkow
Gender: Male
Birth Date: 18 Jan 1905
Birth Place: Our Lady of The Valley, Orange, Essex, New Jersey
Christening Date: 26 Mar 1905
Christening Place: Our Lady of the Valley, Orange, Essex, New Jersey
Father's Name: Joseph Washkow
Mother's Name: Anna Maciegkiewiz
FHL Film Number: 1378182

Louis' WWI Draft Card gives his birth place as Kenty(?), Austria. The same information appears on his WWII card.

In Polish, Kenty is Kety and definitely puts them in Galicia. The 1910 census indicates they are from Galicia (struck out and replaced with Polish).

I don't think this family is related- the childrens' names are not the same.

Louis is an English name which in German is Ludwig and in Hungarian is Lajos. It is the same family. The 1895 New Jersey State Census and the 1900 census name the second child as Katie, but in the 1910 census, she is Kazimiera.

Josef left Hamburg on the Weimar via Leith, Scotland bound for New York on 24 October 1890:

Waschkau, Josef, of Kenty, Galiz. (Galicia)

He changed ships in Glasgow, and arrived in New York on November 17, 1890 aboard the State of Georgia:

Waschkau, Joseph, aged 32, watchmaker
