searching for mayerhofer family from either austria or germany. His first name was Johann, born around 1860 and he married Carolina.They had a son named Carl or Karl Mayerhofer.

In 1860 "Austria" spread from what is now Ukraine, most of Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Serbia, Croatia, Italy what is today's little Austria and quite a bit more. "Germany" spread from the Russian border to well west of the Rhine. I do not think you will get very far unless you can narrow down your area a bit. I would suggest you google up a map of both the German Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the mid 19th century and you should begin to see what I mean.
