Surnames: Kotchavar
Looking for any info on my maternal grandmother's family. Census records indicate they immigrated from Austria. The first to appear in the US are John and Agnes Kotchavar with sons, John and Joseph. I've been researching this line for years, as did my grandmother before she passed. We have very few answers or information. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please email at arnettb35@yahoo.com.

My gg grandfather, John S. Kotchavar, was born 1865 in Holstein, Austria according to the records. Joseph was born in Illinois in 1870 as he was four months old on the 1870 US census. I've seen no records outside US documents, so I could not deny or confirm Slovenia being a possibility for family origination. Cannot find ships manifest with this family. I have researched the ellis island site many times over the years. Thank you all for your replies.

You're welcome.
One starts from oneself going backwards and collecting documents on each generation. Seems you have done that and
found a location Holstein, Austria on what record? Was it in https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list Have you located the location Holstein on a map?
I only put down the Ellis Island arrival being that it is free since I don't have a subscription to Ancestry.
What is the maiden name of the KOTCHAVAR ancestor?

How to......

This has been an 18 year project. I do have a membership to ancestry and have traced the majority of all branches back to 1600-1700s. It is an amazing tool. I have also connected with many relatives along the way. However, the kotchavar side was such a "new" family to the US that any records would probably be located outside the US. Unfortunately, my teacher's salary does not allow for much travel expenses, so I am relying on web communication to help me with the journey. There are limited german records available online unless another family member has posted those.
Here is my connection: nancy nicholson (my mother), Imogene M. Kotchavar (grandmother), Ralph kotchavar (ggrandfather)', John S. kotchavar (gggrandfather) born in Holstein, married Harriett Surbeck (first of family born in US and family originated from Switzerland), and John Kotchavar (ggggrandfather) was the first to arrive in the US between 1865-1869.
As you can see, there were only two kotchavar members -in my line- born in the US. I will visit the sites you provided. Hopefully, I can find additional information soon!

My question, have you located the location HOLSTEIN? Do tell me where it is. I like maps.

Ellis Island did not open until 1892, so you will not find them in that database.

If they were Slovenian the name was more likely originally spelled KOCEVAR, which sounds like kohchevar.

Is this your GGgrandfather as found on a Kane Co IL Naturalization Index Card?

Name: John Kocevar
Birth Date: 31 Oct 1867
Birth Place: Austria
Age at event: 49
Court District: Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Iowa
Date of Action: 19 Sep 1917
Residence 408 S. Lake St, Aurora, Kane Co. IL

If this is him then you need to locate his Naturalization Paperwork which ought to give his birthplace and the date and ship of arrival in the US

According to the Rev. Trunk (a turn of the century Slovenian priest in America) KOCEVAR in Pueblo CO, may have come from Bela Krajna region of south Slovenia, next to the Croatian border

I find no such family in the 1870 IL census. What was the spelling of their name in the census? In which county did the live?
