1942 USS Lexington Survivor List

Surnames: Watson
According to my family, my grandfather was on the USS Lexington at the Battle of the Coral Sea. He was a survivor, but I can't find any sort of list of survivors of that battle to verify. Can anyone tell me if there's some sort of list of crew members and/or survivors? He also went on to be a part of the Korean War, which I also can't verify through Ancestry. His name was Roy Mark Watson. Thanks to anyone who can help.

The USS Lexington held their last reunion September 2010 in Washington DC with a plaque dedication at the Naval Museum. Their is a list of survivors. My father was on the Lexington as we attended many reunions.

Google Standard Form 180 and get as much information requested on the form that you can and then send for his Naval records. Naval records supposedly weren't in the fire of 1973. If you don't have his Naval Serial Number, see if you can get a copy of his discharge records from the County Clerk where he settled down after the war or from the State Archives of that State. They were encouraged to register their discharge. Or see if a relative might know it or even have his folder with his records in it. His naval # will help locate his records faster if they still exist.

Good Luck!!

I couldn't find his number on Ancestry but did find this:

Name: Roy Mark Watson
Relative Name: Mrs. Elizabeth A Watson
Relative Relationship: Wife
State: Texas
Country: United States
Type of Casualty: Wounded In Action

Fairly sure these are pertaining to Roy Mark Watson but don't quote me on that... :)

Oh goodness...I forgot to mention that if he had a military funeral, check with the Sexton of the Cemetery where he is buried and/or the funeral home that handled his burial to see if they have some of his military information...especially his Navy serial number. Also, if he belonged to a VFW or received VA benefits, check with them as well.

:) Ok, sounds good.

Do you know what this means?:

U.S. Marine Corps Muster Rolls, 1798-1958 about Roy M Watson
Name: Roy M Watson
Muster Date: Apr 1942
Rank: Private First Class
Station: Marine Detachment, U. S. S. Lexington

Does this mean he mustered OUT April 1942, or that this was aanother "mission?" What does "marine detachment, USS Lexington" mean?

Thanks!

Honestly, I don't know what Muster date means. But I've googled it and Marine detachment. So maybe these links will help.
