I just recently found the death certificate for my great grandfather who died in Chili in 1922 due to drowning in a barge canal. I was wondering if maybe I could find more information on how it happened or if I could maybe find an obituary. Where would I need to go to look this up? Thank you in advance for any help!

Hi pmarede

I noticed that you have a connection to May Hands/Nicholls, Born Birmingham, I believe she married Levi Ruston in Birmingham. How are you connected?

She is the daughter of Phillip William Hands and Florence Nicholls, my Gt Gt Grandparents, who were from Birmingham, England. May Hands/Nicholls is a younger sister of my Gt Grandfather, Joseph Hands, Born 1866, Birmingham, England.

How are you connected to this family?

Regards

If he died in Chili NY (instead of Little Falls) a drowning would be newsworthy. It should have been in the papers. If you do not find anything in the web site www.fultonhistory.com, then you can order the Rochester papers from the NY state library for a few dollars on inter library loan. Since you have the death certificate, you should have the date. As well, while they are not online, the county medical examiner or police might have records of such an occurrence.

Hi May Nicholls/Hands Born 1885/6 is the younger, half-sister of my Gt Grandfather, who is Joseph Hands, Born 1866, Birmingham. His parents were Philip William Hands (aka William Hands) and Sarah Richards. They are all together as a family in 1871 Census.

Then 1881 Census, Philip William Hands has a new wife, who is Florence (nee Nicholls), Joseph Hands, my Gt Grandfather is with the family, with more children.

Philip William Hands and Florence Nicholls both died in 1887. In 1891 Census, their young children are in the Cottage Homes for Pauper Children, Coleshill, District of Meriden, Birmingham, including May Nicholls/Hands, which is quite sad.

I have some info about May Nicholls/Hands and husband, Levi Ruston and lots of info on my Hands Family.

How are you connected to May Nicholls/Hands? Is it from Levi Ruston or her second husband?

I would be very grateful if you could let me view your tree and you are welcome to view my tree also.

Hi Joan,

I'm also descended from Philip William Hands - my tree is public.

I'm interested in those kids in the pauper homes. My ancestor, Alfred Bertie Hands/Nicholls (I don't think his parents married, BTW) I can track, but some of the others seem to disappear. My father has a hunch that some may have emigrated. Did you ever hear that?

Best wishes,
Alan Howard, London.

Surnames: HANDS & NICHOLLS from Birmingham
Hi Alan

Philip William Hands is my Gt Gt Grandfather, he married Sarah Richards, I have their Marriage Cert, which I think you have seen.

Their son is Joseph Hands my Gt Grandfather. They are all together as a family with their children in 1871, Birmingham. Philip William Hands has his name as William Hands in census, except 1841 & 1881, when he is then Philip William. Just to confuse us!!

Philip William Hands and wife Sarah, part company sometime between 1871 & 1881. 1881 census Philip william is then with Florence nee Nicholls, with more children.

Florence Nicholls died about Jan/Feb 1887, then Phillip William Hands died, 17 July 1887, Queens Hospital, Birmingham, Death Cert states, age 49, a Jeweller, in attendance, his son, W. Hands, who lived Back 103 Arthur Street, Small Heath, Birmingham.

In the 1891 Census, their poor children are in the Childrens Home at Meridan, Coleshill, Birmingham, as you have probably seen.

I have tried to find out a bit about their children, but havn't got very far. I'm sorry but I don't have info on "Bertie" Hands, only have him in 1891 Census. (Is his correct name Alfred)? I have info on his sisters, May Hands, Born 1886 and also Edith Hands, Born 1878. You are welcome to view my Family Tree, I will enter your name, as a guest, to view. How are you connected to the "HANDS Family? May I also view your Tree, please, just enter my Membership name, which is, joanharvey61d, thanks.

Philip William Hands wife, Sarah Hands (nee Richards), makes her way to Shoreditch, Hoxton, London, between 1871/1881. I found her living at 77 Herbert Street, Shoreditch in 1881 Census. (Her name is mistranscribed as Hinds). Their son Joseph Hands (my Gt Grandfather) must follow his Mother to London, sometime after 1881 also. He marries Caroline Manning in 1891, Shoreditch and on his Marriage Cert, his address is given as 77 Herbert Street, Shoreditch, London.

I could not find a marriage for Philip William Hands & Florence Nicholls. He didn't divorce Sarah Richards as far as I know, because, she states in Census 1881 & 1891 that she is married. On her Death Cert, in 1899, Shoreditch, London is states that she is the Widow of William Hands, a Jeweller.

I hope this info is helpful, if you need any more help, let me know.

Best Wishes
Joan Harvey (nee Hands)
