I hope someone can help me. I just returned from a great trip to Scotland, and Kinross in particular. While checking the headstones in the churchyards, I found stones in two different churchyards for Alexander NICOL. In the parish church for Fossoway, in a neat town called Crook of Devon, he erected a stone in memeory of his parents William Nicol and Elizabeth BROWN. Alexander and his wife Anne CURROR are also listed. This Alexander is given a death date of Aug 14 1889, at an age of 85, making him born in 1804. This date makes him most likely the Alexander NICOL born Feb 25 1803 in Fossoway, Scotland. Being born and being buried in Fossoway makes it likely he lived there all his life. Now my problem is this. While in the Orwell churchyard in Milnathort, Scotland, which is 15-20 miles away from Crook of Devon, I guess, I found a stone erected by John NICOL and Margaret WALDIE. JOhn erected the stone in memory of his parents, Alexander NICOL and Janet KIRK. Alexander is given a death date of Dec 9 1865, at age of 69 years, making him born in 1796 or so. Janet is given death date of Jan 5 1869, at age 69, making her born in 1800 or so. While the Alexander NICOL born 1804 or so is in the 1851 census with mother Elizabeth, he is listed as born in 1806, which is within the usual variance of ages. His father is not listed, as he had died in 1848. However, there is no listing in the Kinross-shire for the Alexander NICOL born 1796. Although Alexander (1796) and Janet had all their children born in Orwell parish, Kinross, I am wondering if both of them were born elsewhere. I did find a Janet KIRK born 1799 In Alloa, Clackmannan, Scotland, so that might be a clue. Can SKS with acess to any of the 1851-1881 census check Kinross, Clackmannan, or Perth records for these two people? Thanks is advance for any help

Ken,
Looking at the 1851 census index there is:
Nicoll Alexander age 51 b. Arngask, PER, Living in Orwell
Nicoll Janet age 28 b. Forgan PER, Living in Orwell

Looks as though they had at least 4 of a family:
Ann age 15,
Jane age 8,
John age 26,
Peter age 13.

Could these be your folks?

I am not sure if I ever responded to you, but the people you gave are my line. However, you show Janet to be 28 years old. Is this a typo? She should be 50-51 years old, as I believe her to be born in 1800, as her tombstone shows her to have been 65 at death in 1865.

Your "faux paus" must be catching...I wrote to thank you, and then asked about the same family you had originally written about. Sorry for the mistake. What I can use, however, if to know if there is anywhere I can check to see who was in a certain house. In 1841, I have a NICOL family in "Windy Walls" cottage, and in 1871, my RINTOUL family lives there. I have not been able to connect the 1841 family to my line of NICOLs yet, but I imagine they will connect somehow.

Thanks for your quick reply per the "oops" The next person I need some help on is an Alexander NICOL, who was born in 1796 per tombstone, and died in 1869 He married Janet KIRK apparentely by 1821, when their son William is born in Orwell Parish, where the rest of their kids are also born.
He and his wife should both be in the censuses of 1841, 51, and 61. If I can find out where they were born from the census records, I can most likely figure out who the parents are from the IGI. Thanks for any help you or anyone else can give me.

Just reading the message board, and noticed that the spelling of Nichol has changed to Nicol.
I am descended from Whinton Nicol and Janet Watt.
They married November 3, 1829 in Saint nicholas, Aberdeen.
Children from this marriage;
Isabella b. Sept 10, 1830
Charles b. july 17, 1832
Helen b. Sept 30, 1834
Isaac b. Nov 19, 1836
Margaret b. Aug 12, 1838
William Watt b. Nov 16, 1840
Eliza Gibb b. April 21, 1844
Whinton b. May 8, 1846
Janet King b. May 18, 1851

I am not sure if there is a connection? I do know that some of my family came from Roass-shire, and Charles Nicol settled in Peterhead. Charles became the publisher of the Peterhead Sentinel.

Do you have dates for Charles Nichol(Nicol)? I am looking for a Charles A Nichol born in Dundas Ontario and moved to Sagniaw Michigan in around 1860? If you have any info I would be appreciative. Thanks.

Sir:
Fairly new to Ancestry.com. My husband's family is a direct descendant of Nicol/Rintoul union. We have listed Janet Kirk/Alexander Nicol.

This post is years old so I don't know if you are still around.
