Harm & Grietje (Sikkinga) Boerema/Boerma

Classification: Query
Seeking information on this family after their arrival in the US on 21 May 1866 aboard the Liverpool. There were 3 kids - Abeltje/Abbertje - 4; Ailke/Elka - 5 and Sieger/Siger - 2.

Harm's cousins settled in Muskegon, Ottawa, Kent and Mecosta counties. Believe that Harm was in one of these counties as well.
Thanks!

I’m not related to any member of this family.

1930 is the last available census at this time.

1940 census will be released on April 2, 2012. It will take several months to transcribe all the states.

Thanks for your interest - I did explore the various search engines for this family and then, was hoping for a possible direct connection with this family.

Again, thanks for your help.

I think this is daughter Abeltje's marriage (it fits her 1861 birth in Usquert); maybe it will lead to something:

Michigan Marriages, 1868-1925
Groom's Name: Ha... P Boerma
Groom's Age: 22 years
Groom's Birth Date: 1855
Groom's Birthplace: Sant ['t Zant] Europe
Bride's Name: Ab[ert]ji H Boerma
Bride's Age: 17 years
Bride's Birth Date: 1860
Bride's Birthplace: Un...t [Usquert] Europe
Marriage Date: 21 Feb 1877
Marriage Place: Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, Michigan

Thanks for the lead! This does look like Abeltje Boerema - the husband given - Harm P. Boerema is really I believe - Harm P. Boersema, born 20-5-1853 in 't Zandt, Groningen. Based on the naming pattern of their children it looks like a match to Abeltje.

Now, to find her parents - Harm and Grietje Sikkinga Boerema and her siblings - Ailke and Sieger.

Thanks again for the lead.

Perhaps Harm, Grietje and children died before 1870... Michigan records for those early years are poor. There is a Grietje Boersma who died in K'zoo in 1902, but she was born too early--about 1823 instead of 5 Jan 1836--although I've seen age at death off that much. Her parents are not listed.

I think this death is for Abeltje's husband:

Book 3, p. 228
Kalamazoo County
City of Kalamazoo
26 May 1907
Boersema Hiram P.
54 years-4 months
married
edema of lung
Target man
b. Holland
Peter Boersma
Alice Boekeloo----------yes, same parents (lots of Boekeloos in K'zoo)

It fits his birth on 20 May 1853.

I have an idea of what happened to this family. If you look on the ship’s manifest, there is a mark in the “died on voyage” column after daughter Abertje. Since we know she did not die en route to America, perhaps the registrar did not understand who had died but at least made a mark to indicate that someone in the family had died. Harm? Below I found what seems to be Grietje’s remarriage in Michigan—under her “maiden” name. All [brackets with information are mine]; some documents are pasted for my own reference.

New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Hana Boseman
Arrival Date: 21 May 1866
Birth Year: abt 1842
Age: 24
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Dutch
Place of Origin: Holland, Netherlands
Port of Departure: London, England
Destination: United States of America
Port of Arrival: New York
Port Arrival State: New York
Port Arrival Country: United States
Ship Name: Liverpool
Grietje 26 [b. 5 Jan 1836, Rottum; dv Harm Sikkinga en Abeltje vdLaan]
Abertje 4 [b. 2 Feb 1861, Usquert; mark in “died on voyage column; but she m. in Mich.!]
Seiger 2 [b. 20 Jul 1863, Usquert]
Aike 5 mos. [b. 18 Nov 1865, Usquert]

Huwelijk 22-05-1858 Usquert

Geboren Rottum gem. Kantens
Vader Harm Jans Sikkinga, daglooner
Moeder Abeltje Luies van der Laan
Bron Huwelijksregister Usquert 1858

Here’s that possible remarriage:

Groom's Name: Barnardus Van Der Berg
Groom's Birth Date: 1839
Groom's Age: 27 [b. about 1839]
Bride's Name: Grietje Sikkenga
Bride's Age: 29 [b. about 1837]
Marriage Date: 04 Oct 1866
Marriage Place: Kalamazoo, Michigan

Bernardus was first married in Ouddorp to Klaartje Bosland on 20 Jun 1862; Klaartje’s son Maarten was legitimized, but the date is transcribed incorrectly on his birth cert.

Albertje married in 1877, and her husband died in 1907:

Michigan Marriages, 1868-1925
Groom's Name: Ha... P Boerma
Groom's Age: 22 years
Groom's Birth Date: 1855
Groom's Birthplace: Sant ['t Zant] Europe

Bride's Age: 17 years
Bride's Birth Date: 1860
Bride's Birthplace: Un...t [Usquert] Europe

Book 3, p. 228

Here is the blended family in 1880 (Abeltje is out of the house; Aeilke and Sieger must have died by 1870; Bernard had 3 sons living; Grietje and Bernard had six children together [one more after census]):

1880 United States Federal Census
Name: Gracie Vanderburg
Birthplace: Holland
Home in 1880: Cooper, Kalamazoo, Michigan
Race: White
Gender: Female
Relation to Head of House: Wife
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: Benj. Vanderburg
Father's Birthplace: Holland
Mother's Birthplace: Holland
Household Members:
Benj. Vanderburg 42
Gracie Vanderburg 44
Martin Vanderburg 18 [b. 18 Aug 1861 to Klaastje Bosland]
Abraham Vanderburg 16 [b. 25 Oct 1863 to Bernardus and Klaastje]
John Vanderburg 14 [b. 15 Nov 1864 to B & K]
Katie Vanderburg 12
Hiram Vanderburg 10
Cornelius Vanderburg 8
Jacob Vanderburg 5
Lena Vanderburg 2

In 1873 B. Vanderburg owned 50 acres in section 31 of Cooper Twp.
http://www.historicmapworks.com/Map/US/1603518/Cooper+Townsh...

The 1870 census is harder. They don’t seem to be in Cooper Twp yet, but probably were in Alamo Twp, acc’d to two births below. Here are two possibilities, and you need to picture an enumerator who has no ear for Dutch accents. Dad’s name is wrong on both, but there are some possible matches. The first one seems most likely:

1870 (August 13) United States Federal Census
Name: John Vanderbilt
Age in 1870: 33
Birth Year: abt 1837
Birthplace: Holland
Home in 1870: Alamo, Kalamazoo, Michigan
Race: White
Gender: Male
Post Office: Schoolcraft
Value of real estate: View image
Household Members: Name Age
John Vanderbilt 33
Thuka S Vanderbilt 34
Anna Vanderbilt 10 [could be Abertje]
Martin Vanderbilt 9
Abram Vanderbilt 7
John Vanderbilt 6
Thuka Vanderbilt 1
Catherine Vanderbilt 3 [mos]—this fits “Korneal” b. Mar 1870; see below

1870 (June 30) United States Federal Census
Home in 1870: Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, Michigan
Race: White
Gender: Male
Post Office: Kalamazoo
Household Members:
Cornelius Vanderberg 27
Gertrude Vanderberg 24
Abram Vanderberg 6 [perhaps names are turned around and ages wrong]
Mattie Vanderberg 4, female [error?]
Cornelia Vanderberg 1

Two possible births:

name: Korneal Vanderberry
birth date: 25 Mar 1870
birthplace: Alamo, Kalamazoo, Michigan
gender: Male
race: w
father's name: Ban Vanderberry
father's birthplace: Holland
mother's name: Gretia Vanderberry
mother's birthplace: Holland

Was this child dead by 1870 or from different parents? Or is the year wrong? There is a 10-year-old Hiram in the 1880 census—perhaps born after the 1870 census???

name: Hiram Vanderberg
gender: Male
birth date: 25 Jun 1869
birthplace: Alamo, Kalamazoo, Michigan
father's name: Benjamin Vanderburg
mother's name: Secondzaw Vanderburg

Perhaps the family moved one county north (to Allegan) after 1880. There is a death for a Grace vdB in Allegan Co in 1898. The dob is wrong—it seems to work out to Mar 1838 instead of Jan 1836—but age at death is often incorrect:

County: Allegan
Township: Salem
Name: Grace Vandenberg
Marital Status: Married
Age at first marriage: 22
7 of 9 children living
Birth Year: about 1838
Age: 60 - 11 - 10
Death: 26 Feb 1898
Father's Name: Hiram Sikkenga
Mother's Name: blank
Burial: Salem
Cause: stomach cancer/5 months

Enter: grace vandenberg 1898

In 1900 and 1910 BvdB was in Allegan Co, married a third time to Geese Kuipers:

groom's name: Berrent Vandeberg
groom's birth date: 1839
groom's birthplace: Holland
groom's age: 60
bride's name: Gesse Kuipers
bride's birth date: 1843
bride's birthplace: Germany
bride's age: 56
marriage date: 05 Apr 1899
marriage place: Oakland, Allegan, Michigan
groom's father's name: Abram Vandeburg
groom's mother's name: Cornelia Xan Lausen
bride's father's name: Harm Kuipers
bride's mother's name: Lanmyeja Carman
groom's race: White
groom's marital status: Unknown
bride's race: White
bride's marital status: Unknown

1900 United States Federal Census

Race: White
Gender: Male
Relation to Head of House: Head
Marital Status: Married
Spouse's Name: Gracie Van Den Berg
Marriage Year: 1899
Years Married: 1
Father's Birthplace: Netherlands
Mother's Birthplace: Netherlands
Household Members:
Berend Van Den Berg 61, b. Netherlands
Gracie Van Den Berg 57, b. Nov 1842

1910 United States Federal Census
Name: Bernend Van Der Berg
Birthplace: Holland
Home in 1910: Overisel, Allegan, Michigan

Immigration Year: 1865

Mother's Birthplace: Holland
Household Members:
Bernend Van Der Berg 71; married (3rd time) for 11 years
Grace Van Der Berg 67; 1866 immigrant; 2/2 children living;

I don’t see BvdB in 1920; he definitely died in 1928:

Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan
Death: Apr 1 1928
Bernard VanderBerg
male, white, widowed
89y – 29d [fits Bernardus, b. 3 Mar 1839, Ouddorp]
acute bronchitis
Netherlands
Ret. Farmer
Abram VanderBerg [m. 14 Dec 1838, Ouddorp]
Cornelia VanHoesen [van Huizen]

You will find lots of documents on the kids if you go to FamilySearch.org and type in:

last name: van*
birthplace: kalamazoo, michigan
year range: 1866 / 1886
father's first name: ben*

Try different searches to find more. Below I have summarized what I found, typing names as they appeared.

children of Bernardus & Grietje (plus Bern’s 3 and Griet’s 4):

1. Katie, b. about 1868, Kalamazoo Co, Michigan
m. Lavines Verhage, 6 Feb 1895, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co, Michigan
2. Hiram, b. 25 Jun 1869, Alamo Twp, Kalamazoo Co, Michigan
d. 9 May 1943, Cooper Twp, Kalamazoo Co, Michigan
m. Genevieve Snyder, 1 Mar 1900, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co, Michigan
3. Cornelius, b. 25 Mar 1870, Alamo Twp, Kalamazoo Co, Michigan
m. Fannie Cool, 30 Dec 1896, East Overisel, Allegan Co, Michigan
4. Jacob, b. 8 Mar 1873, Cooper Twp, Kalamazoo Co, Michigan
d. 30 Nov 1946, Plainwell, Allegan Co, Michigan
m. Minnie Cronkhite, 4 Nov 1896, Salem Twp, Allegan Co, Michigan
5. Lena, b. about 1877, Cooper Twp, Kalamazoo Co, Michigan
m. Henry Blecker, 17 May 1899, Allegan, Allegan Co, Michigan
6. Tony, b. about 1880, Cooper Twp, Kalamazoo Co, Michigan
m.1) Francis Laroy, 10 Jul 1901, Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo Co, Michigan
m.2) Gladys Fischer, 24 Jul 1926, Williams Co, Ohio

Grietje’s death cert says she had 9 children—apparently not counting the first Abeltje who died in Usquert/1860.

So, I’ve made quite a mess, but I think this is what became of the family.
