GEORGE CARVILL WINSLOW, was born Chatham, Chatham Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 21OCT1892 (or 21OCT1891 or 21OCT1890, accounts vary), the s/o of Warren Copley and Mary Josephine (Carvill) Winslow. He died 250 Union St., Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 29JAN1929. He was a clerk in H.M.S. Customs. He was buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery. His father was a barrister. Gorge was descendant from the Loyalist, the Hon. Edward Winslow whose ancestor and namesake was Edward Winslow, one of the 'Mayflower' Pilgrims and Governor of the Plymouth Colony.
He gave himself as born Chatham 21OCT1890 when he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1916 in Moosejaw, Saskatchewan. He was 5 feet, 3½ inches, with fair complexion, dark-brown hair and grey eyes.
JOHN CAMERON GODFREY was born Chatham, Chatham Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 3JUL1888. His father, Robert Godfrey, was a lumberman from Black River in Glenelg Parish; and his mother was Mary Anne Cameron, daughter of James Cameron of St. Louis Parish, Kent Co., NB.
John Cameron Godfrey married 2SEP1912 Muriel Alexander (Alexandra?) Stewart, d/o William and Mary F. Stewart. John died in Northumberland Co., NB 18NOV1961.
Sapper John Cameron Godfrey was also in World War I, with the Canadian Engineers and Signals. He joined in Saint John in 1917 and gave his wife as 'Michael' Godfrey of Chatham. He was a saddler and harness maker. He was 5 feet and 11 inches with medium complexion, brown hair and hazel eyes.
John's father, Robert (ca. 1849-25AUG1918) was a son of Robert and Grace (Taylor) Godfrey. Robert, Sr. was a son of Enoch and Elizabeth (MacBeath) Godfrey. Elizabeth was born Kildonnan, Sutherlandshire, Scotland and came to NB ca. 1803-6. She died at Black River 16AJN1868 age 73 years.
Enoch was a son of Richard and Sara Jane (Lavender) Godfrey from Liverpool, Nova Scotia. Richard Godfrey died fairly young at the age of 35 years in Bathurst 26APR1851 after being kicked by a horse. Robert, Sr. dropped dead in his wagon on his way from Black river to Chatham NOV1894.
The ancestor of the family was George Godfrey (ca. 1640-1700) who settled in Eastham, Massachusetts in the mid 1600's; through George's 3rd son, Moses Godfrey.
W. T. DOWER does not seem to exist. The closest is 'Dougler' Dower b. 4FEB1898, s/o Peter McLaggan and Maria Parker (Murray) Dower in Chatham Parish in the 1901 census. Also in Chatham Parish in 1901 was Nathy? Dower b. 6SEP1893, a son of James Alexander and Mary (Frazer) Dower. Peter and Maria also had a son, Brydon Williston Dower born Chatham 9MAY1892. A twin was Thomas Gordon Wilson Dower who died 10DEC1894.
'Dougler' would be Dr. Douglas Peter Dower, DDS who married in Moncton 8SEP1920 Transvaaletta (Etta) Hazelwood, daughter of John and Annie (Rouse) Hazelwood.
'Nathy' Dower, son of James and Mary, would be Walter Dower born SEP1894 in the 1911 census. This seems more likely to be W. T. Dower.
James Alexander Dower (born 17APR1862, d. 27JAN1947) and Peter McLaggan Dower (born Blackville (Loggiville?) 15FEB1867, d. 24JAN1946) were sons of James (b. 12AUG1824) and Jane (Jennie) (Sullivan) Dower. Jane Sullivan was daughter of John Michael Sullivan from County Cork, Ireland and of Barbara Anne Peters, said to have been from Holland. James Dower would seem to be the son of Thomas and Margaret Dower of Nelson Parish in 1851.
CHARLES ALBERT KNOX McLEAN born Chatham 21MAR1892, was the son of Albert George McLean (b. 15JUL1861 in the 1901 census, 14OCT1865 in a birth registration) and of Josephine (Josie) (MacCallum) (born Tabusintac 16APR1859 (19APR1860 in death registration), d. 17OCT1929.) Charles Albert Knox McLean is Albert McLean born MAR1893 in the 1911 census.
Albert George McLean was the son of Michael McLean, from Ireland, and Nancy Sherard, from Scotland.
Josephine (Josie) MacCallum borm Tabusintac, Alnwick Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 16APR1859 was, according to her death registration, the daughter of Donald and Christine (Robertson) MacCallum. This is a bit perplexing. Donald (or Daniel) (b. Chatham Ferry, Northumberland Co., NB ca. 1811-9, d. Newcastle, Northumberland Co., NB, m. 8APR1839) and Christina (McDonald; b. PEI ca. 1814-18) MacCallum had a daughter, Johanna (or Hannah) MacCallum (born ca. 1856), sometimes given as Johanna Josephine MacCallum who married Albert McLean. This seems to be a 'forced fit', but the question cannot be resolved here. If Josie's mother was a Robertson, she was descended from Duncan Robertson who was with the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment of Foot (Black Watch) in the American Revolution. The McCallum's-MacCallum's were also early settlers, possibly with William Davidson, on the Miramichi by at least the 1770's.
WILLIAM HARRISON (HARRY) SNOWBALL born 25APR1890, son of William Bunting and Mary Susan (Harrison) Snowball. William Harrison Snowball married Mabel McGowan.
W. Harrison Snowball was a neighbour to George Carvill Winslow in the 1901 census of Chatham Parish, Northumberland Co., NB so they likely knew each other well.
William Bunting Snowball was born Chatham Parish, Northumberland Co., New Brunswick 12JAN1864. He was the son of Jabez Bunting (born Lunenburg, NS ca. 1837, d. Fredericton, York Co., NB 24FEB1907) and of Jabez' 1st wife. Margaret (Jane?) MacDougall (d. MAR1871), and was an accountant (later president of his father's company.) William Bunting Snowball (Mayor of Chatham, Member of Parliament) married 1st in the Centenary Church, Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 19JUN1889 Mary Susan Harrison (born Jacksonville, Carleton Co., NB ca. 1867, died Chatham 13JUN1894), daughter of the Rev. Frederick W. and Mary Louisa (Fisher) Harrison. He married 2nd Bertha Belle Harris (born in the USA in 1869 and arrived in NB in 1872 or born in Tapleytown, Ontario.)
The Rev. Frederick W. Harrison (ca. 1835-27JUN1900) was a son of Hugh Harrison.
Mary Louisa Fisher (ca. 1842-30SEP1912) was the daughter of John and Mary Fisher. John Fisher came from Cumberland, England to British North America about 1850, and to Carleton Co., NB about 1859.
Jabez Bunting Snowball (24SEP1837-24FEB1907) was Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick 1902-1907. He was the son of the Rev. John Snowball (ca. 1796-13SEP1871), from Easingwold, Yorkshire, England, and of Sarah Ann Wells, from Point de Bute, Westmorland Co., NB. His 2nd wife was Margaret (Maggie) Ellen (Helen) Watt Archibald, daughter of the Rev. Robert and Anne (Hutton) Archibald. They married in the Manse, New Monkland, Airdrie, Scotland 18FEB1873. His 1st wife, Margaret MacDougall, was a daughter of an early employer, John MacDougall. Jabez and Margaret were married at her father's home in Chatham JUL1858. John MacDougall owned a dry goods business in Chatham which Jabez took over when John died, gradually building a significant fortune.
Sarah Ann Wells, wife of the Rev. John Snowball, was a granddaughter William and Margaret (Dobson) Wells; early settlers at Point de Bute, NB. Her parents were their eldest son, George Wells, and Elizabeth Freeman. William Wells was from Yorkshire, England, and his wife likely was as well as the Dobson's came in the same ship. She was born in Sowerby near Thirsk, in the Vale of Mowbray, Yorkshire..
CHARLES PATRICK WOODS born Chatham Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 17MAR1891 was the son of William and Margaret (Walker) Woods.
When he was born, William Woods was a stevedore. Charles was later a tailor in St. Stephen, Charlotte Co., NB and he married Charlotte Co., NB 4NOV1915 Florence Robert Wilson (b. St. Stephen, Charlotte Co., NB ca. 1892) daughter of James and Margaret (Leiper) Wilson.
It is possible, even probable, that William Woods worked for the Snowball's and he and Margaret named a daughter, Charles' sister, Laura Snowball Woods. William was born Chatham ca. 1852 and died there 10FEB1917.
William Woods (b. 6NOV1856) may have been connected to William Woods, Sr of Chatham Parish who married 2nd Napan, Northumberland Co., NB 21NOV1844 Mrs. Margaret Thompson, a widow, of Glenelg Parish. This would be Margaret McFarlane who 1st married Robert Thompson. William's 1st wife, Janet, d. 30JUL1843 age 45 years. Margaret is a widow again, in Glenelg Parish in 1851, and amongst her Thompson children are listed Daniel Thompson age 5 and Robert Thompson age 3. Obviously their surname should be Woods.
Margaret Walker was b. 8JAN1862. She and William were married roughly 1878 and were living in Chatham Parish in 1881 with their eldest child, Jane, b. ca. 1879. Next to them were Richard G. Walker (b. 13JAN1853, d. 26NOV1938) and his wife, Jane Buchanan Woods (d. 5JAN1843); with Richard possibly being Margaret's brother. Similarly, Jane was likely William's sister.
According to Richard Walker's registration of death, his parents were George (ca. 1812-5 -12AUG1895) and Jane (Cassidy) Walker. George, a block maker, married Jane (b. ca. 1829) in Chatham Parish 9JAN1845. The 1851 census states that George came from England in 1843. Most likely Jane Cassidy was a daughter of John Cassidy (b. ca. 1798) a shipwright who came to NB in 1823 and married Mary (b. NB ca. 1808.) This would be John Cassidy b. Pictou, NS ca. 1798, d. 29JAN1872 age 74 years, bur. First Presbyterian Church Cem., Burnt Church, Alnwick Parish, Northumberland Co., NB; probably a son of John and Margaret (Turnbull) Cassidy. His wife was Mary Anderson b. 24MAY1808, d. 28FEB1901, bur. First Presbyterian Church Cem., Burnt Church, Alnwick Parish, Northumberland Co., NB; daughter of James Anderson and Mary Murray. James Anderson settled early (before 1783) on the Miramichi, met Mary Murray when shipwrecked on Prince Edward Island in 1798, married her and brother her and her sister, Ellen, back with him. Mary's parents, John and Margaret (Kennedy) Murray had settled in northern New York from Scotland, were caught up in the American Revolution, went to Shelburne, NS as Loyalists and followed William Schurman to Bedeque, PEI.
That Jane Cassidy was a daughter of John and Margaret (Murray) Cassidy is a matter of speculation, if intriguing.
Richard Walker m. at her father's home, Chatham 2DEC1880 Jane Woods. This suggests her parents were living in Chatham Parish in 1880. Such parents may have been John Woods (born ca. 1821) and His wife, Elizabeth (born ca. 1823.) John Woods (b. ca. 1820) married Napan 25SEP1848 Elizabeth Campbell (b. ca. 1823) of Glenelg Parish. They lived in Glenelg Parish in 1851 with Archibald Campbell (b. ca. 1821), probably Elizabeth's brother.
JAMES FREDERICK (FRITZ) HILDEBRAND born Newcastle Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 29APR1891.
'Fritz' may have been a nickname which soon fell out of fashion. For example he may have been James Frederick Hildebrand born Newcastle Parish 29APR1891, son of George (born Germany 14MAY1852, d. Chatham 8FEB1913) and Annie (born 13JUL1860, d. 6AUG1844) Hildebrand in Chatham Parish in 1901. At least this is apparently the only Hildebrand family in Northumberland Co. at the time. James Frederick seems to have gone by his middle name. In fact, in the 1911 census, Fritz (b. APR1892) was the son of George (born MAY1861) and Annie (born JUL1862) hildebrand of St. John St., Chatham.
Birth records give the parents as George and Ruth Anne (Howell) Hildebrand. In his death record, George was born in Germany and a salesman; presumably for the company know, at one time, as G. A. Lounsbury & Company; in 1902 reorganized as the Lounsbury Company Limited.
Although Annie was born in New Brunswick, in 1881, when George sold agricultural implements in Newcastle, their eldest child, Mabel V. (born JUN1880) was given as born in Prince Edward Island. Mabel Regina Hildebrand born PEI 20JUN1880 was baptized in St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Summerside, PEI 11JUL1880 the daughter of George and 'Agnes' (Howell) Hildebrand. Apparently she was the second child of that name as Mabel R. Hildebrand was baptized in St. Paul's Roman Catholic Church, Summerside, PEI 20JUN1879, with no parents named. This may be an inarticulate reproduction of the other baptism with the birth-date garbled into a baptismal date.
James Frederick Hildebrand likely dropped the 'Fritz' when he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1915 in Saint John. He stated he was a civil engineer, was 5 feet and 6½ inches with fair complexion, light-brown hair and grey eyes.
George Hildebrand likely knew the Snowball's in business way. for example, amongst the directors of the The Miramichi Agricultural Exhibition Association Limited in 1903 were William B. Snowball and George Hildebrand.
FREDERICK (FRED) P. HECKBERT was born Sackville, Westmorland Co., NB 12DEC1888, the son of Sydney Duncan and Estella May (Bowser) Heckbert and died Northumberland Co., NB 11AUG1949. He was a merchant in Chatham, and married 10JUN1918 Eva C. McLean (b. Chatham ca. 1891), daughter of Archibald C. and Mary McLean.
Sydney Duncan Heckbert was born Summerside, PEI 28FEB1868 (9FEB1866 in 1901) and died Northumberland Co., NB 5AUG1953. He was a merchant tailor. he was the son of Joseph Edward and Nancy Ellen (Duggan) Heckbert. Joseph was a grandson of Edward Heckbert from Constants, Switzerland and of Dorothea D. Klein of Halifax, NS, daughter of Valentin and Magdalene (Smith) Klein.
Estella May Bowser was b. Sackville, Sackville Parish, Westmorland Co., NB 17MAY1869, d. Henderson St., Chatham, Chatham Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 8FEB1939 was the daughter of Capt. John L. and Isabel (Bella) A. (Richardson) Bowser. She married Reading, Massachusetts 14MAR1888 Sydney D. Heckbert. Her father was deceased by that time. Stella M. Bowser and her two sisters lived with their widowed mother, Isabel A. Bowser (b. ca. 1843), in Sackville in 1881. Isabel was likely Isabella Richardson, b. ca. 1842, daughter of Charles and Mary Richardson in Sackville Parish in 1851.
