Can anybody tell how i would go about finding any record of a relation of mine who was possibly a patient in the Pontiac Mental Institution.

Depending on when you are talking about institutions can be found in census records. Usually it will list the name of it at the top of the page and refer to people as inmaates. I have seen that with children's homes, elderly and poor houses, hospitals, and jails.

Was he born about 1867?

Yes, inmates are listed as such in the US census, with the institution's name heading the list. Also shown are live-in-staff and their job titles.

The Pontiac State Hospital was called the Eastern Michigan Asylum, renamed Pontiac State Hospital in 1911.

A book called "Michigan Genealogy: Sources & Resources" by Carol McGinnis states that records of state mental health facilities are forever closed except to scholars/researchers with a legitimate research interest, and they must apply for access.

Do you know who his parents were ??

Did he ever get married ??

Did he ever have children ??

What age was he when he was in the hospital ???
