Help with transcription - is this really a ? in this person's name?

I have a grainy old image from the Savannah Register I'm reviewing, and ran across this... is this really a question mark in this person's name, and if so, how should it be keyed?
O.o
Crazy!
I've included several sizes, contrasts, and an inverted color image, which sometimes help me.

Any suggestions welcome.

I think it is Edwd, with a loopy d or a superscript d?
