How to put your genealogical information on the INTERNET???!!

I have a large amount of well documented and researched genealogical information on several of my family lines. Besides dowloading a GEDCOM on Ancestry.com (which I have done), what is the best way for me to make that information available to all on the internet. Im interested in doing it in a way that will not cost me anything and will be free access to all if they Google a name.

Im internet illiterate on this subject.

Neil,

I suspect you have made the easiest step by posting on Ancestry.com, though I'd note that that fails your criteria of no cost, since you have a paid subscription to Ancestry to do that. There are some issues with this method. It generally doesn't do a very good job of displaying your good documentation, and depending on how it was recorded and in what program, may omit some of your information (due to limitations of both GEDCOM and the Ancestry Tree system). I don't think it effective either if your target readers are expected to find you by Google or other search sites. It works best when your expected reader is using Ancestry.

You have posted your question on the Second Site board, but don't say whether you use The Master Genealogist as your genealogy program. Second Site makes excellent websites, but it requires that your data is entered in TMG. If it is you can easily create a site that can be searched by Google and the like, and does a much better job of displaying all your information, including your documentation.

But if you use Second Site or another site-builder, you need some place to host your site. Your ISP probably offers a small amount of hosting space included in your monthly fee, or you can use RootsWeb FreePages. Both of these have disadvantages, but are free of additional cost. A better solution is use a paid host. For the "Internet illiterate" the hosting service offered by Second Site's owner is an excellent choice, but there is a fee for it.

It's old but this might help. See
http://cleaveland.info/miscellaneous/br20021012/b0.htm

If you're a TMG user you have it made using SecondSite in conjunction with the Rootsweb site. See
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/

If you don't have TMG and Second Site, consider one of the GEDCOM-based site generators. Although, as Terry says, they miss some information, you can suggest that observers might want to contact you if interested.

If you're willing to spend $72 per year I highly recommend ICDSoft (http://www2.icdsoft.com/). Their help is outstanding.

Terry's earlier response was more comprehensive, but maybe this will help some.

Many ISPs provide a basic Web site as part of the deal. Check with yours to see if you are already paying for the space, how much it is, etc. -- Darrell
