Unfortunately the Canadian shipping lists are not indexed; you can find information about them at www.collectionscanada.ca, but you'd need to know a date to get anywhere.

In the WWI records Sydney is listed as Sidney John Skinner, his wife Emma Jessie:

In 1901 the family are in Devonport, Sidney Skinner aged 26 b. Bideford, Shoemaker Naval Barracks, b. Bideford, Emma, 28 b. Bideford, Lena, 4. Also a Willie Skinner, 18, b. Bideford Apprentice Boat Building, and an Ellen, aged 30, b. Bideford. (both of the latter are single)

I think Willie also came to Canada:

Sure enough in 1891 Willie is listed as one of Sydney's brothers:

Also on the same page, Trott, Emma Jessie, which is probably the maiden name of his wife.

1881 census shows the 'Ellen' who is in the 1901 census as another sister.

There does seem to be a a tendancy in this family to have the wife slightly older than the husband!

Thank you Jenna for all of the information. You must have been busy finding all that out for me. The newest information that you have provided for me is that Willie was in WW1, I didnt even thinking of checking for him when I checked for Sidney's. Also thank you for the 1891 Troth census information. I have 1881 census but could not find the 1891 census information.

Regarding the immgration information.... it is a tough one to find out. We have figured out that "skinner" came to Canada in around 1908-1914 and looks as though Willie came before hand.

I have noticed that the women are older as well. Now I know why I had an infactuation for older women when I was younger. LOL

Thanks again
Brad

Hello out there,
The mother of Emma Jesse Skinner nee Trott was born Ann Marie REDCLIFT (1852 -1875. Sadly she died at only 23 when Emma and her brother George were only pre schoolers and Emma was brought up by her step mother Grace nee Gay, a Cornish born woman.I am interested in the Trotts and Skinners and Pettles because I live in and own the unique and wonderful cottage outside Bideford where the Redclift family lived for about 40 years.Ann Maria was the fourth of five children born to Sarah Redclift nee Paddon and her husband William. He was a gardener at a "big house" and Sarah a gatekeeper and their home was the gatekeepers lodge.
