Hello, my father's name was Alex Zavack he had three brother's Mike, Steve, Andy and several sister's. Grandfather's name was Alex Zavacky and Grandmother's name was Mary Zavacky. They resided in Butler, PA. My grandparents were supposedly Czech? I believe they were members of St Johns Church in Butler. I know there was another Zavacky family in Butler as well. You would think they would be all related? Anyone with info please respond. Thank You

Some of the names can be found in Czech Republic and Slovak Republic .
I did find a ZAVACKY listings in the city of Praha, Czech Republic.
Our ancestors call themselves Bohemian or Moravian as the Czechoslovakia did not come to existence until after 1918.
In 1993, Czechoslovakia became Czech Republic and Slovak Republic.
Have you looked in the Ellis Island web site for the name?
What religion was this St. John Church?
The name ZAVACKY can also be found in the Eastern region of Slovak Republic in area code 56-Michalovce, Koromla, Vinne, Humenne, Rokytovce, Kosice, Mikova, Stropkov, Bardejov, Svidnik, Spisska Nova Ves, Smizany, Levoca, Hnilcik. Very important to establish a village that they came from. Slovak phone book

I hope you get this...several years later!! My Grandmother was Julia Zavacky of Lyndora, PA which is technically Butler,PA. She is the daughter of John Harry Zavacky and Anna Janesko. According to my aunt, the family came from Mikova in Slovakia. The town is located in the Carpathian Mountains near the Polish border. John Harry Zavacky's parents were Harry Zavacky and Catherine Onufrak from Mikova. I am going to a family reunion in July and plan on getting all the info I can. I will share it. I believe this is the "other" Zavacky family you mentioned. My last name is Herrock (Hirjak). My father is John Herrock, son of Julia Zavacky and Gyurka Hirjak (George Herrock). I can try to give you more information. I believe the names you mentioned may be cousins if not brothers to the family I am related to.

Your message is several years old, but I am trying to sort out some of the Zavackys in Butler Co Pa. Obviously, they are not all brothers because there is a John Zavacky born 1883 and one born in 1885. It appears the one born in 1885 is possibly a brother of Alex Zavacky. Did you ever sort out the relationships? I assume all or most are from Mikova. I am trying to figure out which John Zavacky was a brother of Julia (Zavacky) Warhola of Pittsburgh; it appears more likely to be the one born in 1883. My e-mail:

I found a post on a message board re: Zavacky family from Butler, PA. It was from 2004 so am hoping you are still an Ancestry member. The John Zavacky you mentioned had a brother, Stephen, who is my son's G'grandfather - if we are talking about the same John Z. Stephen was born in 1880 in Mikova & married an Anna/Annie but I don't know her maiden name. How certain are you of John's parents' names? I wasn't able to find anything at all on the parents so am wondering if you got the names from family. Does your info include any other info about them or others in the family? Really hope this reaches you & look forward to hearing from you. Bev
