Trying to determine if James Harvey Nance is the father of Marcus Lafayette Nance. I'm finding some pretty solid evidence but would like to be sure. I believe James Harvey was married to Ann M Brown and had several children and one of the youngest being Marcus L. and my great, great, great grandfather.

Thank you

If you are referring to the Marcus Lafayette Nance of Ripley, Tippah, MS that removed to Tampa and passed away on 11 March 1928, then your birth year is incorrect. His obituary can be found in the Tampa Morning Tribune for Monday, 12 March 1928 on page 2, column 4. This obituary menitons survivors as his widow, a son, C. L. Nance and two daughters, Mrs. D. F. Owens and Mrs. G. F. Grant. There is a follow-up article on 22 March regarding probate and his Will which mentions a widow and 13 grandchildren and, it appears, that his son & sons-in-law are executors.

Hope this helps.

That is the correct ML Nance. His birthday may have been incorrect but I'm certain that is him. I'm having some difficulty finding that archive of his obituary, does it state who his father was?

Thank you for your help.

There is no mention of his parents or siblings in his obituary. Here's my transcription:

There was another news article from 18 Decemeber 1924 regarding the Golden Wedding Anniversary celebration for Marcus & Lina that was hosted by their children. It is far too large to transcribe but it does state the following:

"Mr. and Mrs. Nance were married fifty years ago in Ripley, Miss., and have resided in Tampa for the past five years, where they are beloved by a wide circle fo friends."

This ties Marcus to Ripley, MS where you will find several years of US census records tracking back to his childhood.

Here's a link to the Death Notices of Tippah County: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mstippah/DeathMNO.html

The entry for M. L. Nance states his brother was Ruff Nance. There are several other entires for Nance family members but you'll need to read thru them to find more siblings that you can tie to your Marcus. By researching the siblings you may be able to confirm parentage for all.

Happy hunting -

Diane

Thank you very much for the info and the link. I cans see several other families have made the connection between ML Nance and James Harvey Nance but I really want to be sure. If this is indeed the case, most of the work has been done and we go back farther than I ever imagined possible.

I've nailed down siblings of ML and have been trying that route. Reading that Ruff was the last surviving member is helpful and will try to get confirmation through him.

I'm also solid on ML of Tampa as my family members can confirm that. My cousin in ML the 5th!

Thanks so much for your help with my new addiction.

Thank you. I was able to confirm it as well. It looks as though my line goes back to James Town then Cornwall, England. I'm amazed that we go back that far!
