I am trying to find info on family of Cora Anna HODGES born Sept 13. 1878 in Archie, Cass Co(she had a twin brother, Henry HODGES) MO. But her father-Harrison HODGES was born July 4, 1836 in IL. and mother(Harrison's 2nd wife, I do not know the first wife's name)--Jennie TANKESLEY, born Oct 10, 1850 in IL, lived in Bates Co. Her grandfather, Joseph HODGES came to MO from IL and according to family tradition, donated land for the Bates County courthouse with the stipulation that if the county seat ever moved the land would revert to his heirs. The county seat did move, but as faras I know none of the heirs ever received anything from it.

It's time to update this part of the Hodges family. Since posting the original information, I have learned that Joseph Hodges did not come to Bates Co. but died in Macoupin Co. IL. Harrison Hodges and his brother James came to Bates Co. sometime after 1865 and before 1870. They are listed in the 1870 census next to each other in Deer Creek Township and then near each other in the 1880 census in Boone Township. On a trip to Butler, I was able to find the land records which showed the farms that the brothers owned in the northwest part of the county. Harrison's farm is actually on the south side of the road that is the county line between Bates and Cass. That cleared up one of the mysteries, because I have Cora birth information which lists Archie as her birthplace. The farm is closer to Archie than any other community.
Regarding the land for the court house, obviously the family tradition was wrong since the Bates County courthouse was already there by the time the Hodges boys moved into the county. The basis for that bit of family history is that Harrison's grandfather, Seth Hodges, did donate the land for the courthouse in Macoupin County IL in 1829. He also got the contract to build the courthouse for around $120.

Harrison and his family moved to Cooke Co. TX between 1880 and 1886. His brother James and his family stayed in Bates Co. then later moved to Everett in Cass Co.
