Supposedly, they came from Pitt County. According to family tradition, Willie was the son of John Atkinson of Pitt County. No proof, however.

I am conducting a genealogy search on the Atkinson Family of Bladen County, NC. The earliest Atkinson I could discover was Wilie Alford Atkinson, b.1784, d.1857, m.Susanna Barnhill. Does anyone have information or knowledge of any Atkinsons prior to Wilie Alford? Thanks!

I also have John as the supposed father of Willie Atkinson(1784-1857) who married Susannah Barnhill (1773-1859).
I have their children as:
Mary married Luke Sikes (my line)
Jane married James Holton
Ann married John G. Sutton
Willie Alford Elizabeth Susan Sutton
I've got more info on these lines, mostly on my line, if anyone needs it.

My Gt.Gt.Gt Grandfather Britton Adkison/Atkinson left Columbia Co (Bladen Area) and went to Barbour Co AL. I recently learned another Gt.Gt. Grandfather John Jason "Jackson" Barnhill and wife Emiline Goodson are buried at Eufaula in Barbour,Co.Why they are buried there when they lived in Troy, Pike Co, AL I don't know. They have a Grandson Augustus May Barnhill who married Celia Fuqua. Celia's mother was Lottie Adkison daughter of my GtGt Grandfather Britton Adkison, whose father was the Britton who came from Bladen area.. Maybe your William is the older Britton's father? I have looked for him a long time.He could be a sibling?

Celia: I am looking for information on a John "Jack" Barnhill born abt 1823, father of Pharaoh Barnhill, born 4-17-1844. Other sons of John/Jack were Robert, Berry, and John M. Pharaoh lived at Galivants Ferry, Horry County SC. Pharoah fought in the civil war. He was my 3rd Great grandfather. I have no information on John--also known as Jack --Barnhill, other than he was Pharaoh's dad.

Dear Celia: Thanks for the response from the Bladen Co. NC message board. Your John Jackson Barnhill appears to be a different one than the one I am looking for. It is strange to have so close a 1st name and under the surname Barnhill. I am willing to bet their will be some connection up the line. Mine moved to Horry Co SC from somewhere in NC; where I don't know. I'm still searching for my 'needle' in the haystack. If you run across any information on my line, send it along and I will try to return the same for you. George
