I saw your reply on the Deforrest board and am also a daughter of Howard Eugene "Gene" Deforrest. I was adopted at birth and only met him twice when he came to visit. At that time I did not know he was my biological father. After he passed away I met his mother Mary C. Wilson at her home in Bushnell and she told me of her mother being Cherokee and showed me the moosehide pocket from her grandchildren in Toronto. I met your mother when she was waitressing at Baker's steakhouse in West Springfield. I have also met Corky (she was best friend's with Laura Teed Skeel my best friend Mary Ann Teed's sister. And have met Dana when she worked at Giant Eagle as a cashier. I lived in Conneaut 28 yrs. and now live in Painesville. I knew there was a missing sibling from his brief marriage to Patricia S. and am assuming it was the mother of the gentleman you were replying to. I have found Mary C. Smith back to her parents Stranford and Bertha C.Smith, and think I have found Bertha's parents Ransom & Zellia Hills in Beaver County Pa. but have not been able to follow Gene's father's side. Do you have any information that might help. I know that Mary C. Deforrest listed herself as a widow in the 1930 census when Howard was 1 year old, they were listed as boarders in Niles Ohio. and she was working as a waitress. I found an article that a Howard Deforrest was killed as a flagman on the railroad in Mahoning listed as being from Huntington Pa. originally and a picture article of Gene when he was stationed in Calif. as a "big brother" to a child at a handicapped home. If you could give me any information to further the search I will be happy to share everything I have found with you and the family.
