Susan Winston b. in Hanover Co. Virginia in the 1750s. m. William Elmore. I think her sister was Sara Winston m. John Henry and was the mother of Patrick Henry.

If Susan WINSTON was born in 1750's she's too late to be sister to Sarah who was born ca 1710. I don't have an Elmore in my data base, but she could be close relative to Sarah.

I think Sara had a brother named Peter, and he had a daughter named Susan. Would you know any thing about that. Thanks for answering me.

Dear Rose Pitt: My memory is very, very suspect...but it tells me that while in London (UK) several years ago, I happened on a church which had a sign indicating that the parent(s) of Patrick Henry (b. 1736) were among the members. I believe the mother's name was Winston. Again, I don't trust that memory, but perhaps you can check on it.

Dear Juliana:

There appears no short way to explain this, and in the end no simple solution to your quest, but hopefully I will at least give you a decent starting place and fill in a few gaps.

1. It is obvious from his birth in 1813 that James Madison Winston was a namesake for President James Madison.

2. Family history indicates that Patrick Henry's mother and Dolly Madison's grandmother were Winston sisters.

3. Isaac Winston (born 1681-died March 6, 1760) lived in Hanover, Virginia and married Mary Dabney (born 1685) also of Hanover, Virginia.
Children included:
Lucy Winston
Sarah Winston

Sarah Winston married John Henry and one of their children was Patrick Henry.

Lucy Winston married William Coles and familysearch.com does not list the children born to them. Although no date is given for their marriage, each lived to the age of 60 and it is highly probable that they had offspring.

4. Dolly Dorothea Madison (wife of President James Madison) was the issue of John Payne, Jr. and Mary COLES Payne. So there we have the relationship between the Winston sisters although absolute verification of the direct link of Mary Coles to Lucy (Winston) Coles has not been found yet.

5. It is reasonable to assume that the Winston family was close to James and Dolly Madison through there relationship.

Inasmuch as Dolly and James Madison had no children, it is highly likely that a male heir of one of Lucy's (and Sarah's) brothers (thus preserving the Winston surname) chose to honor the late President by naming their son after him, thus we would have James Madison Winston.

6. The immediate heirs (sons) of the following would all qualify as uncles of Dolly Madison and would be the most likely to name one of their offspring James Madison Winston:

William or Langloo Winston - born 1705 in Hanover, Virginia

Isaac Winston born somewhere between 1710 and 1719 in Hanover, Virginia (there are two separate listings for Isaac in the children of Isaac and Sarah Winston).

William Winston - born 1721 in Hanover, Virginia

Anthony Winston - born September29, 1723 in Hanover, Virginia

Most likely one of their sons or grandsons is responsible for the James Madison Winston you are seeking.

Good luck.
