Surnames: HANSON, SCAMFER, PALM, BROWN, WHITE
I am researching Gulbrand and Severine HANSON from Biri, Norway who settled in Sand Creek, WI. One of their daughters, Martha HANSON, married Thomas SCAMFER and moved to Washburn in 1892. They had several children: Mabel, Grover, Arthur, Clara (Brown), Ingwald, Seena (White), Isabell (Palm), Engval and Reuben.

I have some info on these families, but would love to exchange more.

Wow - I hope you check in with this board more often than I do....

I'm still researching the Hanson family - Scamfer in your case (Thomas Scamfer married my GGreat Aunt Martha Hanson.

I'd love to have any information on descendants of this couple. I'm willing to share any other Hanson info you may want.

Photos would be great too - I have several of Julia, Hans and Sena Hanson, but none of Martha.

Gudbrand Hansen and Severine Haldorsdatter were married in Biri parish, Oppland, on 10 Apr 1864.

They left for America with their children on 10 May 1882

Here they are in the 1865 census, living at the farm "Lundvolden mittre":

Their first three children were born at the farm "Sigstad", in Biri:

Hanna Marie, 1 Nov 1866
Martha, 4 Oct 1868
Hans, 30 Mar 1871

I haven't looked to verify further dates.

They boarded the ship "Angelo" in Kristiania (Oslo) on 12 May 1882, with the final destination of Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The Angelo only went to England. There, they would travel to Liverpool to board a ship for America.

Wow, thank you so much Brian!

I take it that Gudbrand was "anglicized" to Gustaf
My Great Grandma Julia Hanson's birthday was Aug 15, 1876 -- can you interpret the date differently?

I have done hands-on research for the German half of my ancestry, but the Norwegian half was pretty much handed to me. I've never even visited the Norwegian research facility here in Madison, WI, so I appreciate the links to the original documents.

How do you fit into the family?

Here's me:

Julia Hanson & Francis Johnson
--- Mildred Johnson & Milliard Gubberud (he ran off - she kept her maiden name)
------ Sidney Johnson & Carolyn Otto
---------Eric Johnson

Hi,

I am not related to the family. I just enjoy helping people with their Norwegian research.

The birth date listed for Julie says "19/767" which would be "19 July 1867". This is obviously not correct - the way it is entered there is no way to tell what was meant. There seem to be several years of missing records in Biri. The births for 1876 are not listed, so I can't check the original records to see the correct date of birth.

You are correct about Gudbrand using the name "Gustav".

Looking again at the birth date, it could be a 15 just as easily as a 19. The way it looks, the scribe possibly first entered "15/76", forgetting the month - then added the "7" afterwards, which would mean July. I wouldn't change the date of birth you have, this record seems a little odd.

Sina was also born at Sigstad, so I think it is safe to assume that ALL children were born there.
