I do not know if we are related to Josef. My father was Ernest Walter Kodera and his father was Henry Kodera. We are from New York, New York. I understand that the family was from Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. I am interested in any information you may have regarding Kodera's immigrating to the USA, particularly New York.

My Mother and Grandparents are now deceased, but they did not migrate to the USA.

I have just found an "Otolie" Kodera listed as mother on marriage record for my great grandma, Mary Chochola when she married Jaroslav Sluka in NYC, 1887... never heard that name before, but Mary was born in Bohemia... anyone have access to Bohemian records?

I am sure you know that you need to find a precise place of birth among US documents to proceed with the research over the big water to present Czech Republic part of historical region Bohemia.

Dear zbeca!

Thank you for the reminders ... and for the wonderful map links! You are such a wealth of info.... as you probably have guessed, a great many of us would not be posting here if we had access to that info :)...

After 3 yrs and several 'elders' passing on, i'm back ... sort of... I have found that M Chochola was a 'step-mom', (Steffan/Stepan or Stepanova was mom), but that Jaroslav Sluka was from Strakonice, and visited a brother Josef in Novo Strakonice in 1926... I am currently mired in French vital records databases, (assisting my mother-in-law), but am eager to get back to my 'roots'...and soon will revisit that line, so... if any sources come to mind, i would be most interested!
with advance appreciation, dorothy

My g.g.grandfather was Ferdinand Sluka who was born in Volenice, close to Strakonice in 1829. His father was Anton Sluka. Ferdinand came to Nebraska in 1870. He died in 1907. I do not have any other information on his family other than what I listed but the location of his birth suggests a possible link.

Thank you! I have taken a brief look at the parish registers in the cz archives online, but am discouraged by the lack of info I have.... Strakonice has so many areas/registers... and I am not even sure which religion ... possibly RC but that is iffy. Do you know Ferdinand's religion and if he was born in Volenice? Also have you ever seen any variations on the 'czech' spelling of Sluka?

For me, it's back to the 'needle in the haystack' with regard to my 'Bohemian' roots! :( However, I much appreciate your interest and info! :)
