What does this mean?

This appeared three times in the New-Hampshire Patriot:

""This is to forbid all persons harboring or (trusting?-illegible) my son, WILLIAM WHITCOMB, as I shall pay no debts of his contracting after this date.

ABEL WHITCOMB, Henniker, April 10, 1849""

(quotation markes are mine) William's age was just past his 16th birthday. Was William a scofflaw?

I'm not an expert, but I'm guessing that the son was running up debt (could have been anything-- lodging, food, clothing, books, gambling, etc.) and telling folks that his father would pay. Sounds as if his father had had enough!
