I believe I am on the right path but I am not 100% positive... as I am looking for information at the begining of my tree. Walter Dewey Gillespie (Cincinnati) b1898 d1926 and his father Charles W? ..b1873 Covington Kentucky d unknown if you have information on these gentlemen please email me.

I have some information about Gillespie's (TAZEWELL VA) that takes them back to Stirling Scotland William Burgess of Scotland 1520 -1567

I also have a split in the tree @ WIlliam Gillespie b.1720 marriage to Mary CLENDENNING b 1745

CLENDENNING/GLENDONWYN traces back to royalty as early as 845 Alain I "le Grand" King of Brittany

My problem is I know I have SOMEONE'S Pedigree but I am not sure it is MINE ... so if you can help with the location of Charles with son Walter in above mention time frame and location I would REALLY appriciate it ..,

Sincerely
James Edward Gillespie
31st great grandson of
ALAIN I "LE GRAND" KING OF BRITTANY ?

James E. Gillespie,
All I know is that the traditional story of three Gillespie brothers came over from Scotland to the south?? where specific I don't know about 1700 or so.
My G's are all from Orange/Ulster County New York. I know that some of them(?) migrated to the Ohio, western Pennsylvania area. So far I have not tracted them.

I would like to refrain from posting any history here as it is not verified and some may construe it as the Word of God. I will be happy to email my findings to anyone interested. I am thankful for the encouragement I have receieved from all and I am willing to help with what I can.

I am not sure of the migration pattern (does anyone know how anyone got anywhere?) perhaps by the time I write my book ... "Ruts" (stagecoach wheels leave these) I will have that information. :) However it seems that William b1720 Northern Ireland had a son James b 1761 who lived in VA ... James had a son Mathew b1792 who ventured? into Kentucky ... and they told 2 friends and so on and so on ....

I am still stuck on finding Charles W. with son Walter Dewey.

Do you have family member names from the early to late 1800's? My Gillespies are also from Pennsy. - some into Ontario and back to Pennsy. again. The Ontario branch also ended up in California.

Is it accurate that the Scots were lured to Northern Ireland by low taxes by the English wishing to dilute the Catholic hold on the country ? What about the Plantation System ? We always considered ourselves of Scottish descent, rather than Irish, altho immigrant Thos. Gillespie's tombstone says he came from Donegal. Anyone have a clearer idea of what all went on ?

Notes for SARAH WILLIAMS GILLESPIE:
I have a medical history of all her family written by her brother Franklin, who was a doctor in the Army Medical Corps. He says she was born in 1821, was a governess in early life, married at 30, had two sons and two daughters. She was 5ft 5ins, had dark brown hair and brown eyes. She was the tallest and most elegant of the girls, dark skinned with some colour. Her nose was rather flat on the bridge. She had moderate myopia. Her intellect was very with considerable mental energy and power, highly cultured and self reliant. A most amiable and good disposition and qualities well balanced. Not bilious.(a lot of them were). She painted, played and sang very well and had facility in acquiring languages.

Gillespie

Sir Henry Newbolt
1862 - 1938

Riding at dawn, riding alone;
Gillespie left the town behind;
Before he turned down the Westward road
A horseman crossed him, staggering blind.

"The Devil's abroad in false Vellore,
The Devil that stabs by night," he said,
"Women and children, rank and file,
Dying and dead, dying and dead."

Without a word, without a groan,
Sudden and swift Gillespie turned,
The blood roared in his ears like fire,
Like fire the road beneath him burned.

He thundered back to Arcot gate,
He thundered up through Arcot town,
Before he thought a second thought
In the barrack yard he lighted down.

"Trumpeter, sound for the Light Dragoons,
Sound to saddle and spur, " he said;
"He that is ready may ride with me,
And he that can may ride ahead."

Fierce and fain, fierce and fain,
Behind him went the troopers grim,
They road as ride the Light Dragoons,.
But never a man could ride with him.

Their rowels ripped their horses' sides,
Their hearts with red with a deeper goad,
But ever alone before them all
Gillespie rode, Gillespie rode.

Alone he came to false Vellore,
The walls were bare, the gates were barred;
Alone he walked where the bullets bit,
And called above to the Sergeant's Guard.

"Sergeant, Sergeant, open the gate,
Where are your officers all?" he said;
Heavily came the Sergeant's voice
"There are two living, and forty dead."

"A rope, a rope," Gillespie cried:
They bound their belts to serve his need;
There was not a rebel behind the wall
But laid his barrel and drew his bead.

There was not a rebel among them all
But pulled his trigger and cursed his aim,
For lightly swung and rightly swung
Over the gate Gillespie came.

He dressed the line, he lead the charge,
They swept the wall like a stream in spate,
And roaring over the roar they heard
The galloper guns that burst the gate.

Fierce and fain, fierce and fain,
The troopers rode the reeking flight:
The very stones remember still
The end of them that stab by night.

They've kept the tale a hundred years,
They'll keep the tale a hundred more:
Riding at dawn, riding alone,
Gillespie came to false Vellore.
