Surnames: Leighton, Pickering, Orren, Nicholson, McDougle
I am researching the Leighton Family who appear to have come from County Durham - Monkwearmouth, Bishopswearmouth,Gateshead,Hartlepool and Stockton on Tees.
A lot of the Family have 'second' given names as: Ralph Orren Leighton, John McDougle Leighton,Joseph Nicholson Leighton & Richard Maltby Leighton. The Ralph Orren name has been traced back to pre - 1700 and into the 1940's.
A lot of the Family were Master Mariners and were found in
Warkworth, Northumberland, Hull and West Ham (London).
If anyone can give extra info I will be grateful
Bob Pickering

Bob,
Most of those in your message were sons of Richard Orren Grierson (Grayson?) Leighton and his wife Mary Maltby, who were married in Sunderland on 1 Feb. 1823. Richard was the son of John Leighton and Mary Nicholson of Gateshead, baptised there on 23 Nov. 1800. Mary Maltby was the daughter of Capt. Thomas Maltby and his wife Mary. She may have been Mary Baker, because they gave the name Thomas Baker Maltby to their only son, but I have not found their marriage record to confirm this.

The children of Richard and Mary Leighton were baptised in Sunderland:
1. Richard Maltby Leighton on 6 July 1824
2. Mary Maltby Leighton on 23? Nov. 1825
3. Thomas Maltby Leighton on 4 Feb. 1827
4. John McDougal Leighton on 30 Mar. 1830
5. Joseph Nicholson Leighton on 1 Nov. 1832
6. Jessey Leighton on 6 Feb. 1836

I didn't find the baptism of a son Ralph Orren Leighton, as in your list, but I don't know if he was of an earlier generation.

Dear John,
Many, Many thanks for your communication which has given me not only an insite into the Maltbys but also filled in some Leighton gaps. I am not sure where you personally fit into the pattern but there is no doubt that we are Cussies of some sort.
I have not been able to find the origin of the given name Orren or as it is sometimes listed, Oren or Orin, but it must have been pre 1700 - it is usually prefixed with Ralph (Richard Greirson was an exception but sveral of his brothers & sisters were given the same name (There were at least 13 Brothers & Sisters! One of them married a man called John McDougal which like Orren, John Maltby and Joseph Nicholson, been carried down well into the 20th century.
Did you know that one of Richard Greirsons brothers (Robert Henry) had a son Richard who went to Ceylon, married twice and finished up as a Justice of the Peace.
I would be delighted to let you have more but scared of boring you - suffice it to say that I am delighted to have found a new family member. Incidentally, many of the Leightons were Master Mariners.

Regards

Bob Pickering

Bob,
I'm a descendant of Mary Maltby's brother Thomas Baker Maltby, who sailed to New Brunswick and settled there in 1817. As far as I can tell I'm not actually a Leighton descendant, but if your line goes through Mary Maltby, we're related.
