My husband's Mother is Lona Sterlene (Dacus) Robb, gdau of Pascal Laurence "Pack" Dacus. I've recently started researching the Dacus line, and from forum info I'm wondering what the connection between the Anderson, S C Dacus family and the Greene-Craighead Co family. I noticed Pack and a Nathaniel are shown on both postings with the same birth date, but it looked on the Anderson posting, Pack is the son of John W. Jr.??
Would like to be straightened out on relationship, if possible.
Thanks,

There is a direct connection between the Dacus line in South Carolina and that in Arkansas. By migration pattern, it goes through Anderson Co, Pickens Co, Greenville Co, SC to Cherokee co, AL and finally to Craighead/Greene Co, AR in about 1852.

You will also come across the name Pascal in more than one line...there's Pascal Hawkins Dacus, for example, who is the son of Arthur Dacus, grandson of Archibald Dacus, and whose family remained in SC for several generations.

To keep it simple...the family lineage comes from John Dacus (1720-1795), whose children included Nathaniel, John, and Archibald, inter alia.

Pascal Lawrence Dacus is the son of Nathaniel Dacus and grandson of John Dacus (junior).

Birth: ca 1755, Lunenburg Co, VA
Death: ca 1829, Dacusville, Pickens Co, SC
Burial: Dacusville, Pickens Co, SC

Cica 1790: Left Lunenburg VA area and settled in Greenville and Pickens counties, SC. Father and brothers accompanied. All had Land Grants.
1811: John Dacus buys 200 acres adjacent to Reedy River from Lawrence Brasher. (book K, 4)
1821: opurchases 350 acres on Gregory’s Creek, Anderson Co, SC from Joseph Grisham.
1824: sells 250 acres, same location, to Samuel Stephens. (book R, 19)
1824: John sells 100 acres adjoining William Dacus, witnessed by Pascal and Annie B. Dacus.

(Griffin notes) See 1800 census of Greenville Co, Pickens Co. SC Deed Book A-1, pp. 87-89: About the time of John Dacus Jrs. death it appears that the adult children and wife Nancy are deeding land to Nathaniel Dacus (172 acres on Saluda River known as the Maudlin Bridge Tract).

Also see deeds Bk A-1, pp 213-214 re this same land. It appears that all the adult family members are settling up their interests in this land. Then in the Greenville deeds, wife Nancy and three minor children are involved in partitionaing and selling their inherited land "situated in said district on waters of Gilders Creek on Enoree River." Lemuel and Martha, legal heirs of John Dacus, deceased, petition the courts to have their "uncle" Reuben Bramlet appoint their guardian to manage their interest in the real estate. (28 Sep 1829).

The Wittsburg trail referred to a river town in St. Francis which brought the original goods west into Craighead Co and surrounding areas. After the arrival of the railroad into Lawrence Co, the prinicpal route shifted to the railroad. Thus, the entry by

Greene Co Historical Journal, from a 1939 story in the Grenne Co Citizen: Nancy Dacus Newberry was shot and left for dead by a robber, but she recovered. The criminal was apprehended, jailed, and subsequently wrote a poem about the incident.

"Nancy Newberry lived to be seventy-six. She died in 1883." quoting an article, "Song of a Jailbird", from Greene County
Historical and Genealogical Society Quarterly Journal, written about the first quarter of 1998 by editor, Mack A. Hamblen. "Song of a Jailbird" was originally published 9 Feb 1939 by John F. Rainey in the Greene County Citizen. "Song of a Jailbird" was an "ode" written by ______ Conroy while he was in the jail at Gainesville, Greene County for robbing Nancy DACUS Newberry, shooting her in the hip, and leaving her for dead in 1875. "Mr. Rainey reported that the poem was brought into his office by John W. Pillow [John William PILLOW, 1857-1942, who was an uncle of John William "Johny" "Johnnie" PILLOW, 1871-1951. They are buried 10 feet apart in Pine Knot Cemetery, see Johny in Chapter 6] of Route 5, Paragould. Pillow obtained the copy from his friend, J. Sam Thompson [Joseph Samuel "Sam" THOMPSON, 1899-1968], County Clerk, who had it in his files." The further disposition of ______ Conroy was not stated. { "[ ]" bracketed items are by Grant Collar.

“John and Nancy Newberry had lived in Greene county since 1854. They settled on rich low land south of Gainesville along Locust Creek. John joined the Confederacy at the outbreak of the war and was killed in 1862, leaving Nancy to raise 5 boys and one girl.
James F., John's oldest son, was wounded at Murfreesboro on Dec. 31, 1862. He became a POW Nov 10, 1863, returning home after the war.
Because of their losses and sacrifices, and their zeal for work, the Newberry's were beloved by everyone. If a harm came to a Newberry, it was considered an act against the entire county.
Nancy Newberry was a very strong woman, both physically and mentally. She continued to farm the property along with her sons until they left home. Then she used hired help.
Mrs. Newberry produced a bumper corn crop in 1874. She stored it in the bins of two barns. Because of the drought of 1875, she was able to get a dollar a bushel. Word got around that she had stashed her money in the cracks of her log home. There were no banks in the county then.
A man named CONROY got a job working as a "farmhand" for Mrs. Newberry. He hadheard about her "corn money." While he was working in a field with several other "hands," he slipped away, went to the widow's home and robbed the sixty-nine year old woman of her money. He shot her and left her for dead.
Sheriff "Stape" White, who had been appointed sheriff on J.A. Owens death in January, formed a possee and took out after Conroy.
The group of men included ex-sheriffs Memory Gramling and J.P. Willkockson, John N. Johnson, Jim Jackson, Verni Luney, Lon Stedman, "Ruff" and Jim Cole, and John Wright. Doctors Wyse, Thorn and Wall rode along to administer emergency treatment in case anyone was wounded.”

James F. Newberry, a prominent and highly respected farmer of Greene Co, was born in Alabama in 1844,and is the son of John Newberry, [p.162] who came to this State in 1854. Here he engaged in farming and was for two years justice of the peace. At the breaking out of the Civil War he entered the Confederate service under Gen. Joseph E. Johnston, and was killed in 1862. He reared a family of six children, five sons and one daughter. James F. Newberry was in the Confederate service during the entire war, and was wounded in the left leg. In 1864 he returned
to his farm in Greene Co, and devoted himself to its improvement. He then owned 100 acres, which he has since increased to 425. A part of his farm is under cultivation, and he is also interested in raising cattle and fine mules. He married Mary Morgan, who bore him six children and died in 1880, aged thirty years. He chose as his second wife Mrs. Charity (Dennis) Ross, and to their union have been given four children. The nine children are: Robert E., born
in 1865; Martha C., born in 1867, died in 1880; Sarah F., born in 1870; John E., born in 1872; Isabella, born in 1874;
Laura E., born in 1881; James J., born in 1883, died in 1884; Jennie B., born in 1885, and Myrtle G., born in 1887,died in 1889. Mr. Newberry is a stanch Democrat in politics, and he and his wife are popular in the community inwhich they live. [3]

1809: Thomas Dacus purchased 200 acres on Enoree River from Henry T. Walker.

I found Thomas' estate records in Newton Co., Georgia in the Austin, Texas
Library and it tells alot. I also found out the man who Dacus, Texas is
named for: Judson Berry Dacus and now I know that he was a son of Isham W.
Dacus who is some way related to Thomas of Georgia. Isham would have been
born around 1810-1820 because out of his five children, the births are
1843, 1845, 1848 and the last 2 unsure. Isham married in 1838 to Penelope
A. Reynolds and the Administrator of Thoms' estate was Permedus Reynolds.

Confederate, 1862--1864
Enlisted March 8, 1862, Choctow Co, Pigeon Roost, Mississippi
Pvt., Co, "E," 31st Reg't, Mississippi Vols. Infantry, by Col. J. A. Orr for
3 yrs.
Mansfield W. Dacus is listed on the 1841 STATE Census, Choctow Co,
Mississippi Also his brother Lemuel W. Dacus is listed on same census and
Lemuel W. Dacus is on the FEDERAL 1840 Census for Oktibbetha Co,
Mississippi, but Mansfield W. Dacus is not listed for that year. (he may or
may not have been in Mississippi in 1840) Mansfield W. Dacus was not married
at this time.

Mansfield Walker Dacus was married May 13. 1841 Winston Co. Mississippi.
This information received from Tom. E. Wilson along with a copy of Marriage
Certificate.

Mansfield Walker Dacus death is listed in a Bible of Tom E. Wilson as
Aug. 16, 1892. (can only assume he died in Fulton Co, AR--no proof of
where he died or where he is buried)

Mansfield Walker Dacus's Civil War record consists of ONLY 11 Company Muster
Rolls No other Civil War records are on file for him (or at least this all I
got when requesting all information for him from the war department)

Listed below are the 11 Co, Muster rolls with the remarks section.

expiration of sick leave

July - Aug 1863 Deserted, Dropped from the roll Aug. 31, 1864

All of these Co. Muster Rolls list him as never paid.

The only information I have as to what was going on at this period of time
was an article I read (this is a case of not coping or writing down the name
of the book) I think it was in the Goodspeed? History of Choctow Co,
Mississippi during the Civil War. Statements made as to many Confederate
soldiers in this area were hiding in the woods along with their families
trying to survive and were desolate. Union forces were in and out of the area
and did execute any confederate soldier found. Choctow Count Court House was
burned by the Union soldiers in 1863. (it was also burned again after the
war in 1868).

Mr. Odom, I was reading your info about the Dacus family and saw the Reuben Bramblett name. Are you descended from this family. I have an ancestor, Reuben Bramblett, son of William Bramlett, born 1847 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He and his family migrated to Kentucky, then settled in Saline County, Illinois. Reuben's ggrandson-- my ggrandfather, Daniel Moore and his family, came to Jonesboro, Craighead County, Arkansas in 1895. Most of his descendents still live in the area. My grandfather was James A. Moore, born 1879.

Do you have much info on your Bramblett line?

Sorry..since this is a collateral line, I have no documented research on them except as indicated below. However, what little I have indicates there is a relationship between the Bramlett families. Reuben was born in Faquier county, VA and is the son of John Bramlett, who also had a son named William.

If this helps, here is what I have:

I am not a Dacus but am very close friends to a grandson of the late J. U. Dacus of the Mt. Zion area. Most of his relatives are in California now. I am doing research for his grandson Kent. I have several photos of the family church and land located in Ebenezer community. I do know they are of Greek decent. Would love to share any information I have as well as any you have. Please feel free to email me.
Thank you.

Susannah, I am Kent's cousin, Gerald's nephew, and great-grandson of J.U. Dacus. It's a small world. I would love to gain access to whatever work has been done on behalf of Kent. Of course, I could contact him directly. I was with him in July for the funeral of our Uncle Tom Dacus.
Sincerely,
