I hear there is a Seals Family Cemetery in Sneedville. Where is it located and is there an list of names available of people buried there? Also, in what area is "Short Mountain" located?

Short Mountain is in Hancock Co between the Claiborne Co line and Route 63. I don't know if it is considered a part of Newmans' Ridge or not, but Short Mtn is close to Newman's Ridge and runs parallel with it.

There are so many Seals in the Claiborne/Hancock Co area that they are certainly not all buried in one cemetery. The book Hancock County Tennessee and its People, Volume II 1994, lists several:
Seal Cemetery
District 6
Located 1 mile west of Sneedville on Back Valley Road on the T J Seal Home

Seal Cemetery
District 6
Located Back Valley Rd 1/4 mile from Depew Cemetery on right

Seal Cemetery
District 6
Located West of Sneedville, Hwy 33 - 4 miles - just before Seal-Mathis School Tazewell Hwy on the Kyle Seal Property

Seal Cemetery
District 6
Located River Road Hwy 33 West of Snedville above Roy Seal house

Old Seal Cemetery
District 6
Located From Hwy 33, turn on Back Valley Rd, behind Briar Creek Church on Henley Sutton Farm

See what I mean?

Those buried in the various cemeteries are listed, but are much to numerous to list here. If I can look up 3 or 4 people for you, it might point to a specific cemetery if you are looking for only one cemetery.

I am interested in Orvil Seals. His wife and other family members may be buried near him. Thanks for all your help.

I did not find any Orvil Seals in my Hancock Cemetery info. However, I found the following in the Cemeteries of Claiborne County by Paul Johnson:

Howards Quarter Cemetery
Located: Behind the Old Howards Quarter School, Southeast of Hwy 33 in Big Sycamore

Orvil C. Seals
b. July 13, 1889
d. Apr 18, 1955

Eppie Seals
b. Apr 15, 1892
d. Oct 24, 1967

Gary Wayne Seals
b. Nov 27, 1953
d. July 25, 1968

Darlene Seals
b. March 24, 1958
d. March 25, 1958

Would this be your Orvil?

Hi Jeanene,
There was only one Philip Seal listed. This one was born Dec 8, 1944 and died May 18, 1992. So obviously not the one you're looking for.
The book I use for Hancock cemeteries is HANCOCK COUNTY TENNESSEE AND ITS PEOPLE, VOLUME II, 1994. It is available from the
Hancock County Historical and Genealogical Society
P O Box 307
Sneedville, Tn 37869
(423)733-0140
HCHandGS@xtn.net

It costs $55 if you pick it up or $61 if mailed.
It has a lot of info about early Hancock Co and then there are family histories submitted by families. If you have other Seal names, I'd be happy to look to see if they are in the book as a family story before investing in the book.

Jeanene,
I should have included this:

There were many Seals in Claiborne Co, too, but I checked that cemetery book, also, and there was no Philip Seal.

CEMETERIES OF CLAIBORNE COUNTY TENNESSEE by Paul Johnson
order from:
Paul Johnson
1160 Cave Springs Rd.
Tazewell, Tn 37879

I don't remember exactly how much this one was, seems like around $30.

Jeanene,
Hancock Co was formed in 1846 from Claiborne and Hawkins Counties. Maybe that would help.
