Classification: Query
Surnames: GATES, GROVES, SHUTT

I seek information about the GATES and GROVES families of early Muhlenberg County because both intermarried with the descendants of HENRY SHUTT (b 1763 PA or MD d 1852 Auburn IL) and his wife ELIZABETH GROVES (b 1768 NC d 1840). HENRY and ELIZABETH married in NC (place uncertain) had several children and migrated to Kentucky in the first few years of the nineteenth century from North Carolina and settled in Muhlenberg Co. The family with whom the HENRY SHUTT descendants most frequently intermarried were the GATES. SHUTT-GATES marriages are listed below:
12 Aug 1817 SHUTT, Jonathon GATES, Elizabeth Muhlenberg
09 June 1819 SHUTT, John to GATES, Catherine in Muhlenberg
24 Jan 1850 SHUTT, Jefferson to GATES, Angeline N. in Muhlenberg
28-Apr 1858 SHUTT, Benjamin to GATES, Lurana in Muhlenberg
27-Nov 1885 SHUTT, Lenora to GATES, Hugh W in McLean

It is probable that ELIZABETH and CATHERINE GATES were sisters, marrying brothers Jonathon
and John (sons of Henry and Elizabeth).

Questions:
1. Who were the parents of ELIZABETH GROVES and did they also settle in Muhlenberg Co?
2. Who were the early GROVE settlers in Muhlenberg and what was their relationship?
3. Who were the parents of ELIZABETH and CATHERINE GATES, and the other GATES shown above. Was their father MICHAEL GATES?
4. Who were the early GATES settlers in Muhlenberg and what was their relationship to each other?
5. Did the SHUTTs, GROVES and GATES come from the same place in NC and migrate to KY together?

I am eager to learn more about these families and will be pleased to share information.
Many thanks.

Note: According to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky; Turner Publishing, Paducah, KY, 1996, p. 120, col. 1 bottom, Elizabeth and William Dukes were the out-of-wedlock children of Sarah Duke. They were awarded to Samuel Dukes, Jr., in a Bute Co., NC, court of law on Feb. 8, 1779, when Elizabeth was five and William was three. Samuel and Wennifred raised the children. Elizabeth came with them to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky. WFT vol 5, Tree #1716 has Elizabeth marrying John Shutt on Feb. 5, 1825 in Muhlenberg County. However, according to Carol Tefft, ctefft@pacbell.net, on 1 Nov 2000, this appears to be another Elizabeth Groves. According to Solomon Groves' son, Samson, Elizabeth married George Gates, and they both died about 1825. (Carol Tefft took this from the 1891 Biographical Album of Macoupin County, IL, pp. 831-832.)
