Has anyone untangled the various Wilson families from Lorneville? I am looking for information on John Wilson and Rosanna McKay Wilson. Their son Thomas (1848-1912) is buried in the cemetary and it lists his parents as John Wilson and Rosanna McKay. Any help making family connections would be appreciated.

It is interesting you are connecting Wilson's and Lornville. I am under the impression I have living relatives I have never met there - a Kenneth (Jr). Can you be of any help? My father was a Wilson out of St John, his brother was Kenneth (I guess SR)

Thank you so much for the valuable information. I found the original link from your Lorneville Cemeteries list on the web so I really owe you my thanks. I had only been able to go back to Samuel Galbraith Wilson and did not know his parents. Since Wilson is such a popular Irish name in the Saint John area, I did not think that I would be so lucky to make any connections further back. These message boards are a wonderful source of information

I can add some information on his family from the family bible. I did see it (not in my possession) and copied down the information as well as some information from the Provincial Archives (on-line) that I have found :

Saumuel Galbraith Wilson (October 23, 1874 - August 23, 1948) married Alma Minnie Bryant on August 30, 1899 (her name appears as Bryan or Bryant in various records but my mother always used the Bryant surname)

Their children were :

James Arthur (June 16, 1900 - July 4, 1970)
Samuel Allan (January 30, 1901 - February 25, 1902)
Arnold Thomas (December 30, 1902 - September 28, 1986)
Rita Martha ( November 15, 1904 - January 31, 1982)
Alma Mary (December 16, 1906 - October 4, 1907)
Florian Edith (August 17, 1909 - April 21, 1987)
Harold Bryant (February 8, 1911 - 1977)
Stanford Charles (March 5, 1915 - November 16, 1995)

James Arthur Wilson was my grandfather. I can provide a bit more information on his siblings, if interested.

Many thanks for you assistance in my family research - much appreciated.

I don't see any connection to my family tree. However there are so many Wilson families in the Saint John region it is probably not surprising. Suzanne Carter's reply shows the Wilson connection to Lorneville and there are quite a few families listed there. I was pleased to get her information and it helped me out. Hopefully, someone will have information to help you out as well.

Happy family hunting

I have the baptism records for James Wilson (1840) and Martha Wilson (1842), the children of William Wilson and Mary Ann Craig. Both were born in Portstewart, Ireland. The rest of the children also claimed they were born in Ireland (on their death records), so I am wondering when did the Wilson's come to Lorneville? What evidence is there that the three boys (John, Thomas and William) came to NB through NY and Quebec in the 1830's? Thanks for any insight!

Hi Brenda, I checked my records and the source for that info about them coming through Quebec and NY came from Stuart Robinson. He is/was a real authority on Lorneville but I don't know if he is still alive. He lives in the states but came up every year and interviewed a lot of the oldest generation for many years.
I consider his info as reliable as their memories. I have seen brothers do this before. They had no idea how big Canada is and would take any boat they could with the idea of meeting up in Lorneville (Piscarinco in those days).
As far as the children go, the info on records is only as reliable as the knowledge of the informant who supplied it. Not always right. Generally Baptism records are the best source but if they aren't available, I go by the date of arrival of the mother and the most common birthdate given by the child in later years. Birthdays were not very accurate in most cases. I'll update my files to show James and Mattie's correct birthplace - thanks. As for the others, some were buried in Old Cedar Hill Cem., West Saint John, but again gravestones are only as accurate as the knowledge of the informant and I have run into many mistakes.I hope this helps,
Suzanne Carter

Thank you for replying Suzanne! I am waiting for the microfilm for Kings County marriages to see if William and Mary Ann were really married there in 1839 (as I have seen this posted many times); if they were, then it is likely true that the Wilson boys arrived in the 1830's. But it is curious that Wm. & his wife would travel back to Ireland! It's too bad there are no census records still around for that area from 1851/61!! From the baptism records:
James Wilson was born Aug 21 1840, baptized Sept 1 1840 (Presbyterian, Portstewart); Martha was born Jan 4 1842, baptized March 6th, 1842. Brenda

I have the Marriage registers for Kings (1810 - 1888)and Saint John Co. (1790 - 1873) That is not your William WILSON who married in Kings Co. It says "William Rennie WILSON, Parish of Sussex (Kings Co.) / Ann SNIDER, spinster, Parish of Sussex, 11 Oct 1827. Witness Jacon SNIDER, Peter COUGLE. There is no other William WILSON listed. Also Sussex would be over 2 days travel from Lorneville in those days, so it's very unlikely they would marry someone from so far away - but not impossible :).
I have searched high and low for burial place for William WILSON and Mary Ann CRAIG with no luck. I had it that she was buried at old Cedar Hill but it must have been a mistake as it's not in the records. Since some of their children were buried in the Lorneville Cemetery, they likely were too. Earlier caretakers threw broken stones away. I found some in the bushes there. But not Wilsons. I don't know where I got Mary Ann's birth and death dates. When I switched to Family Tree Maker I lost 30 years of reference tags. I will keep looking, but I suspect their grave is now unmarked in Lorneville. I seriously doubt they would travel back to ireland.
