My ancestor Antonio Ciaccia is I think referenced in other documents as Prospero Ciaccia. Is Prospero italian for Antonio? This ancestor was born in Italy but immigrated to the Rhode Island area about 1910.

Thanks,

well, bill...if you're still out there. Antonio is the Italian name for Anthony. Prospero is to prosper or some one of great wealth and fortune...much like the Fortunato. as a wish of good luck for their future, if all the family names had been given out (or if it was a familly name), the italians often gave names to their children of what they wished for them. such as prosperity. hope that answers your questions...even if it's a few years later.
