I am seeking any Hodes families from Lithuania possibly Kovno/Kuanus. My Great Grandmother was Rebecca HODES who married Wulf LEVIN mid 1800's. She also had a sister? sister-in-law? Emma HODES. The LEVIN's left Lithuania about 1879 (Lithuania>Sweden>London, England>Chicago, Illinois,USA)

Other surnames connectted to this family are Levine, Yoselle, Alexander, Jaffe, and Kahn.

Our family came from Vilna/Schmorgen. Of course, Hodes was how the name was Anglicized. It was more like Chodash.

Hi Carol - If you are still out there, please reply. My great grandmother was Malke Hodes from Vilna. She came to the US in the early 1900's. I have not been able to find any record of her coming to the US, but I know that she escaped from Russia.

My email is ManitouTanka@comcast.net

Thanks,
Tracey

It's possible that your great-grandmother was a "lantsman" - or someone from the same village. I believe my grandparents came to the States in 1902. For many years I was told they were from Vilna and Minsk but on their naturalization papers it says Schmorgeon. They're probably neighboring or Vilna and Minsk were likely the "big" cities nearby.
Where did your great grandmother settle in the States? Do you know what her "original" name was before it was Americanized?
You might want to write to the Immigration Dept. in Washington for her naturalization papers, often very useful.

HI

My grandmother was Cille Hodes, her father was Issichar Hodes, Lithuania. Do you have any information on this branch? I would love to hear from you.

Thanks Gillian

Eilat Gordon Levitan has an online page for Myadel/Miadziol, which is very near Kovno. Many Hodes/Chodosch families originate in Myadel(including mine).

Go to www.eilatgordonlevitan.com and search around. Lots of labeled group photos -- you might find something.

Hi and thanks. However I tried to go to the website that you suggested but it did not work. Can you please send me the weblink again? Maybe there was a typo or something...

Have a great day
