soldier information from War of 1812

Where would I go to find information on a soldier, if I don't know his regiment? I'm looking for William Robinson, born about 1789 in County Down, Ireland, who came to Canada during the War of 1812 with his regiment. He was a British soldier before coming to Canada. He eventually settled in Lanark County, Canada.

Thanks.

My suggestion would be to first try to find an obituary, if one exists. That would depend on date and location where he died, and I believe there would have been a cost so this also restricted people from placing a notice.

There are a few compiled sources of early Ontario death notices, and I'll have a look at the indexes to see if his name comes up.

Where you able to solve this question? My ancestor also fought in War 1812 and settled in Lanark Co, a 'private in the Canadian Fencibles' but I can find no record of him on any lists and I don't know who was his commander.
