Looking for data on Joel SMITH, in Greene Co, IL in 1860 census. My Joel should be about 26, b.c.1834 in TN, wife Evaline (d.1863) with male child M.A. age 1. He is son of Seth S. SMITH (1805-1891) of Harrison Co, MO, Grainger Co, TN, and Chatham Co, NC, and wife Rebecca WILLIS (1810-1891). Joel later fought in the Civil War.

Thank you, Olivia, for all that information. That is not the Joel I wanted...mine was born 25 Oct 1834 in Grainger County to Seth Smith. HOWEVER, your Joel may well be a first cousin or uncle to mine, as I have an inkling that Isaac Smith was a brother or uncle of Seth S. Smith. They came from Chatham Co, NC to Grainger Co, TN about 1825. Dick

Thanks Dick.
Isaac Smith born 1787, I understand was blind, and blindness may have affected other relatives also in this line. Another Isaac Smith born in 1815 NC, I believed developed blindness in his 40's and was the son of Abner T. Smith Sr. 1792 and Martha 1786. Currently I am trying to establish Isaac and Abner as brothers as they appeared closely together in census records NC/Grainger TN, and Greene IL. That is all the information I have on Isaac Smith but will be looking in Chatham NC and see what turns up next.

My Smith's developed blindness in adulthood. I traced my Smith's back to Iredell, NC 1810, then onto Grainger, TN 1830-1850, and then onto Greene, IL 1860 forward. Two sons of Isaac's went to Mercer MO about 1850 and I am currently trying to research them.

Am curious what other info you have on Abner T. Smith and his family/line. I am almost certain that this is my line, but would like to get all the info I can. ANYTHING you could share would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
