Name of birthplace help

In the 1871 census for the family of Gavin Barrie b 1829 & Agnes Morton b 1834, their birthplace is listed as "Marmatone, Ayrshire". I've tried Googling it, but I'm not even getting any suggestions for something close. Can anyone give me an idea of what the actual name of this town might be?

I guess it doesn't really matter since it's the only time it shows up this way. In other years it's listed as either Newmilns or Loudoun.

Have you looked at the original image on ? Ancestry is well-known for very poor transcriptions.

Surnames: Barrie, Morton
I think it may be Galston, per 1841 Census.

Definitely always check the original as the Ancestry version are awful - they are fine as a guide but can lead people astray if you accept as correct. In this case it is actually Newmilns

FindMyPast has Gavin (42) and Agnes (37) both as born Newmilns.

Alas FMP, like Ancestry, can have transcription errors too.
On this 1871 census FMP has Gavin as Garin - Ancestry has Gavin as Gani.
Quantity over quality comes to mind.

It's always best to look at the original pages if possible.
I often use Ancestry & FMP if I can't easily find a family on Scotlandspeople.
They are useful in that both can be searched using a forename only, age etc.
Once I've found who I think are the correct family I go to SP.

Though sometimes you then have to play about to see what SP has them indexed as!
But it's usually correct - certainly they have far fewer errors.
